That's what mystifies me about the narrative I see most often: Michael Brown stole cigars, so obviously he then assaulted a police officer. No. Petty shoplifting is in no way connected to assault, let alone assault of a police officer - thousands of Americans shoplift every day without assaulting police officers. But assaulting a shop owner and then assaulting a police officer? Yes, those two acts are definitely connected - obviously the fact that the former occurred doesn't prove that the latter occurred, but at least it's a coherent narrative, so what's what's with the focus on stealing cigars?

Yeah, I agree, and I think it's important to emphasize that the theft was violent. Otherwise it's just "hurr he's a criminal criminals do criminal things."

I still think manditory cameras on all cops and a requirement they all carry a taser is a good idea. Yes, tasers can be abused but proper training can greatly reduce the instances of over use or misuse while the camera keeps them honest and provides evidence.

I largely think Google glass is useless and firmly believe most of them are "gl*******s" but cops are an excellent place where Google Glass would come in handy. Everything they see would get recorded and backed up on the cloud, punishments could be figured out for cops who turned off or didn't wear their Google Glasses and it would provide direct video evidence of events. In most cases it would vindicate the cops version of events but in cases where the cop was lying then people could prove it just by showing the video. It is a win for honest cops and a way to catch the dishonest ones.

According to released testimony, witnesses contradicted each other. That's usually enough for probable cause and an indictment. We're not talking about trial standards of guilt here.

What happens if a prosecutor considering a grand jury or already using one discovers exculpatory evidence? What if that evidence negates the probable cause?

I saw a picture of the scene of the shooting and I'm puzzled. The police car is shown as stopped in one lane of the road. Adjacent to the car were some blood splattering, 2 bullet casings and Mr. Brown's cap. About 30 feet down the roar Mr. Brown's sandals were found, then about 70 to 80 feet from the police car there. Mr. Brown's body and 10 bullet casings. Did the police get out of the car and pump bullets into Mr. Brown after he had hit the officer in the car and then begun to flee the scene? Did more than one officer fire his gun, because I don't know of any semi-automatic pistol which carries 12 rounds in a clip?
