Requiring an MBA to be in management is the kind of promotion strategy employed by companies large enough where the CEO can't personally know every member of his staff, and my company can grow a fair bit larger before that happens. Even if it does, it's the consultants pulling the highest billable rates that I suspect would be promoted.
It's certainly possible to become or remain middle management at a small company without getting an MBA. Yes.

Did I ever say this wasn't the case? I don't think you could be more patronizing if you started explaining basic arithmetic. At many companies the place is run by the intellectual equals of shaved baboons. I'm perfectly aware of this.
I still love his advice on ass-kissing. "Right, all of a sudden you totally love it because I made one off-hand comment about it in a meeting."

I don't want to make a big deal about the MBA thing. I just received a bit of clarification. Here's what I've been told:

Regarding mid-size to large companies, an MBA or industry-specific Master's degree is all but required for Director level positions and higher. It's very rare to find someone at that level who doesn't have such a degree. Smaller organizations are a different beast. This also varies by industry... but is generally true... generally. Exceptions exist.

For the purpose of this thread, reg works at a small company. My statement does not apply.

Now, can we just argue about abortion and gay marriage?

There are plenty of large companies that don't give a flying **** about an MBA. For example, any law firm. And most software companies.

I can't help you if you're going to fail at reading comprehension.

What's funny is that you just agreed with me:

Also, I'm pretty sure a law degree falls under "industry specific graduate degree
            .

            You dumb entitled shit.

Unless you're a founding member of a software company, if it takes off, don't expect to get a director level job without an MBA or other advanced degree.

It's much easier (though not faster) to buy stuff when you work for an MNC, not an SME. People will actually drive to your office to sell you some hardware or software. And you have a procurement dept that knows **** about IT, but drives a hard bargain.

I'm a director at one of the largest research companies in the world and I don't have a MBA.

And while ALBY may take the level of brown nosing to the extreme he is correct that it's never a bad idea to connect with your boss over something.

Actually civ is why I hired someone here. One of my best hires.

That's a no-brainer. If you're into Civ you're obviously already ahead of the game.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                        Unless you suck at it......

Playing civ isn't enough. I would want to see how they do on King level at least (preferably Emperor level).

I'd hire someone who liked civ.

Current boss loves 'Pearls Before Swine". I like "Pearls Before Swine". Ask her what she thought of Watterson and we have a good chat over our favorite comics and why.

There's a right way and a wrong way to do it. Why would I feign interest in something I don't like just because the boss does, when there are plenty of opportunities to find actual interests.
