Lower birth rates and emigration account for the fall in the white population; black African economic migration (encouraged by apartheid era regimes), destabilisation of the Front Line states and political refugees account for some of the other increase- as does a higher birth rate among black South Africans.

I think it was around 1980 or so? It's something like 20% now so that's plausible given how much emigration there has been.

OK, in 1960 the total population of the country was listed as 16 million, 3 million of whom were white. Today the population is 56 million, about 5 million of whom are white. So in 1960 the population was about 19% white. UN estimates the 1960 population as 17.5 million, so that would have made the whites about 16% of the population.
