There is definitely something to be said for having a teacher or mentor in just about any field, even mostly self-taught fields just to assess your progress and keep you on the right track. Maybe the institution of college is unnecessary but google cannot replace a mentor.

Any reason companies can't provide mentors for inexperienced employees?

That's been very common in most of the companies I've worked for - even if somebody is an experienced programmer they could still use some mentoring while they get acclimated with the code base.

Sometimes that's not an option through, for example one company I worked for had a total of three "employees" - the two co-owners and me. The technical co-owner had no time to mentor me, and the non-technical co-owner didn't have the ability to mentor me. In that case the technical one said "here's a few PDFs explaining the database you'll be working with, now off you go," and three months later he checked in to see how I was doing.

Amateurs, not really understanding the theory tend to reinvent the wheel. They go over ground that's already well established without really understanding that it's been covered. They tend to do extremely well in their specialities - ie, if you're a civil war buff, that sort of thing - they get the fine details out but they aren't necessarily too concerned about corroboration, etc.

You make the kind of mistakes that I'd expect to see from a high school kid with a chip on their shoulder. I'd like to believe you're just a troll, simply because for you to have a degree in history and STILL be that appallingly bad at history says terrible things about the state of the college you went to.

Sure, you get the odd ignorant person like Kentonio or Gribbler, but they are the exception, not the norm.

How is college even necessary when you can find pretty much any information you need by Googling it? College is only useful for people who can't learn independently and need to have their hand held and be guided through the process.

I'm an English Catholic, Kentonio. Do you really expect that I'd agree with the prevalent opinion towards the Tudors? There are very good (and longstanding historical reasons), for Catholic opposition to Tudor England.

Someone who's never attended college cannot make the assessment regarding a college education of anyone, including me.

Whereas, I can go back and take a look at you. I see someone who parrots the common opinion that he learned in high school, has never critically assessed anything in his life and is shocked in the real world when actual educated people challenge his assumptions.
