To Gov. Romney's credit, the 2012 election should not have been even as 'close' as it actually became. The gulf between the candidates was massive for months leading to the general election and a President Obama re-election seemed predetermined. A surprisingly strong first debate showing by Gov. Romney (and a terrible performance by the President) helped to narrow the oceanic wide gulf between the candidates to a reasonably wide but considerably narrow in comparison straight. That 4% difference in the popular vote is a testament to the better than expected showing by Gov. Romney who, months prior, was expected by some to be even a double-digit loser.

Remember, the 2008 election featured a 7% margin of victory.

Romney actually lost a considerable portion of the Republican turnout. Had he merely charted the same course as McCain and got the same white voter turnout he would have won.

Remember, the 2008 election featured a 7% margin of victory.

What you're missing is that Obama had a greater than 10 percent turnout decline. If you lost by 5 and your opponent dropped by 10 percent, you actually dropped by 5 percent too.

It should be pretty easy to chart out his actual positions:

In his 13-page essay titled “God and Advanced Mammon — Can Theological Types Handle Usury and Capitalism?” Mr. Brat, an economics professor at Randolph-Macon College in Ashland, Va., near Richmond, calls both conservatives and liberals hypocritical and wrote that “the government holds a monopoly on violence” because it enforces the law.

But it is the reference to Hitler’s Germany that is likely to turn heads during Mr. Brat’s first full day as a tea party star.

The full context of his second Holocaust prognostication comes in a section about how if Christian people “had the guts to spread the word,” government would not need to “backstop every action we take.”

He writes:

Capitalism is here to stay, and we need a church model that corresponds to that reality. Read Nietzsche. Nietzsche’s diagnosis of the weak modern Christian democratic man was spot on. Jesus was a great man. Jesus said he was the Son of God. Jesus made things happen. Jesus had faith. Jesus actually made people better. Then came the Christians. What happened? What went wrong? We appear to be a bit passive. Hitler came along, and he did not meet with unified resistance. I have the sinking feeling that it could all happen again, quite easily. The church should rise up higher than Nietzsche could see and prove him wrong. We should love our neighbor so much that we actually believe in right and wrong, and do something about it. If we all did the right thing and had the guts to spread the word, we would not need the government to backstop every action we take.

Mr. Brat also criticizes both ends of the political spectrum for inconsistencies. He blasts conservatives for the pursuit of individual liberty while pushing laws restricting abortion, gay marriage and gambling. He writes:

Can Christians force others to follow their ethical teachings on social issues? Note that consistency is lacking on all sides of this issue. The political Right likes to champion individual rights and individual liberty, but it has also worked to enforce morality in relation to abortion, gambling, and homosexuality. The Left likes to think of itself as the bulwark of progressive liberal individualism, and yet it seeks to progressively coerce others to fund every social program under the sun via majority rule. Houston, we have a problem. Coercion is on the rise. What is the root word for liberalism? (Answer: Liberty)

And then Mr. Brat implied there is no reason to entrust either conservatives or liberals with the government that he said “holds a monopoly on violence.” He writes:

It does not mean that the State alone uses violence, but it does mean that when push comes to shove, the State will win in a battle of wills. If you refuse to pay your taxes, you will lose. You will go to jail, and if you fight, you will lose. The government holds a monopoly on violence. Any law that we vote for is ultimately backed by the full force of our government and military. Do we trust institutions of the government to ensure justice? Is that what history teaches us about the State? Or do we live in particularly lucky and fortunate times where the State can be trusted to do minimal justice? The State’s budget is currently about $3 trillion a year. Do you trust that power to the political Right? Do you trust it to the Left? If you answered “no” to either question, you may have a major problem in the future.

It was Romney's election to lose, and Romney lost that election while being as far from the Tea Party as he could possibly be.

The first part is true but the second part isn't. He had to run so far to the right in the primaries, just to win the nomination, that he was unelectable come the general. This is going to be the pattern for all Republicans running for president for the next several decades. You want to know why Cantor and the other big wigs want to push for immigration reform? Because just about every hispanic in the country knows Republicans are the ones preventing it and mostly for racist reasons. This is making Republicans unelectable in areas with decent sized hispanic minorities (which is the fastest growing ethnic group in the country).

They know they have to do something or the party just keeps shrinking and dying. The problem is their almost exclusively old and white party base still wants to play racist identity politics games so the party can't correct its course even as they see the bus going off the cliff.

And you wonder why people think you know nothing about American politics. Tea Party candidates who overthrew other established Republicans didn't get followed unless they said crazy things.

4 points PV is downright miniscule. It was the smallest margin of victory for re-election in decades, and a slight swing would have resulted in a flipped EV count. Yes, it was very close.

Smallest in decades, eh? Are you even old enough to remember Bush v Gore much less vote at the time? Also, yes 124 EVs are huge. Lastly Cantor was a two faced ****heel which was the main reason no one liked him even in his own party. He said one thing in public but did something else when ever the lobbyists bribed him enough. He was the king of double speak. Personally, I can't forgive him for plotting to completely obstruct everything in DC the day after the election and before Obama even took office. Cantor was the architect of obstruct everything policy of the GOP, even blocking their own bills if Obama said he supported them, because they didn't want Obama to get credit for anything. The actual needs of the country didn't matter to Cantor only playing partisan games did so the sooner he is gone the better.
