  • At least as of the latest expansion you're best off splitting your fleet into multiple stacks if it's sufficiently large; generally no more than 6-8 battleships or carriers.

The IC days required to max out a stack in naval or air combat is really ****ing huge though so.

        • As AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA AAH said, balancing the effect of stacking can be handled by collateral damage. Stacking was actually a truly horribly bad idea in Civ IV when first released (and much worse than that before release) against players who knew what they were doing. That's because Catapults (and later siege) just owned everything on a cost:benefit basis. Even their best counter (Knights) were at a disadvantage even investment and it only got worse the larger the stacks. (This lead to collateral damage being cut in half, and it was still overpowered at release. Then they blew up the game balance later. But collateral damage is still very effective against stacks in BTS.)

Of course stacking your Catapults wasn't a good idea either.

Main problem is the AI didn't have any concept of using collateral damage effectively. So this mechanic only really showed itself in MP or when players were dealing with AI stacks.

As for managing stacks, it's actually much less overhead when using stack commands than managing the unit carpet that 1UPT results in. You can tell a stack of 50 or 500 units to "go to" wherever they're going and even if it takes 10 turns to get there you get there in 10 turns with one shift-click unless something monumental happens (and then you probably want to change course anyways).

Compare that to getting 5 units there in 1UPT unit carpet land, where to get there in 10 turns you either have to get really lucky with 5 "go to" commands (this almost never works), or click up to 50 times depending on how many "go to" routes are open and how much you want to risk one of them getting re-routed in some absurd manner.

          • I never understood what was so damn hard about just having reasonable stack limits instead of this stack of doom vs 1UPT bull**** debate.

                  • I like both, but its still disconcerting. Playing Civ5 is like a trip through Farnsworth's what-if machine.

                            • I think I would do a great job as lead designer of this new game. First I would rename it Alpha Centauri II and argue EA abandoned the trademark (Firaxis offices would have to be set up abroad in the event of federal intervention). I would be honest in interviews and admit Civ 5 and 1UPT never worked and was God's punishment for homosexuality. I would then tell the artists to just copy SMAC (20% of the budget) and spend the other 80% recruiting Soren Johnson and/or Bryan Reynolds to improve the AI.

The preening voiceovers without any of the self awareness that made Civ4 somewhat bearable? How about the lack of AI or the disgusting visuals that look like cat vomit?
