Will things like AVG etc be able to protect from malware hacks etc, despite win xp not getting official updates?

No, and it couldn't before either.

Security concerns aren't necessary? Good to know...

does win 8 handle civ games okay?
Can't speak for 8, but 7 had an easier time than XP.

I don't recall having any security issues with XP but maybe only people who work for the government are dumb enough to download malware.

XP will be increasingly unable to run on more and more advanced computer architectures. The idea that it wouldn't ever need to be replaced is ludicrous.

It means I've found computers protected by many different products to have been compromised by malware anyway. Internet security is a promise like your young, nubile wife will make to you about being faithful.

AVG is the least faithful of them all.

AVG is Intel, why would they be any worse than the rest?

I didn't notice any problems with AVG.
You can have the beautiful wife and her not cheating
Seriously though I've noticed something else which is notesworthy:
let's say I'm typing something in this forum in one firefox tab and on the other firefox tab there's youtube.
I get very targeted ads in youtube based on what i've writen (or the system thinks I've written) on the other tab?
So the logical assumprtion is that firefox tabs are interconnected and share information between eachother.
                            I don't like that.

                              What?

AVG Technologies, a publicly traded Czech company formerly known as Grisoft.

My experience with clients who've used it is not good. There's also the change to the end-user agreement some time ago where you agreed to them collecting information about your computer use and doing anything they wanted with it...

                              Then there's stuff like this
As of 2014, there are numerous reports dating back to 2012 that the AVG SafeGuard Toolbar installs itself without the consent of the user, as a side effect of installing other applications. The toolbar program appears to cause significant RAM issues. Once installed, the toolbar is virtually impossible to remove: It's uninstaller does not function, and it re-installs if manually removed. There are many discussions and blog posts that describe complex procedures for removal of the AVG toolbar, with very mixed results.

It's a crap product put out by a crap company.

If you go to "Grisoft" link...

In 2001, Jan Gritzbach decided to sell Grisoft to Benson Oak Capital Acquisitions. Four years later, Benson Oak sold a 65% share in the company to Intel Capital and Enterprise Investors for $52 million.[2][3][4]

Ok, Intel owns just 65%, but they should care to a degree that the product is not total crap.
