This thread shall now be about Windows 8.

Given MS' decision to bring back the start menu, are there any other reasons to avoid Windows 8?

When it comes out(there's a few months out yet), probably no.

No, it still sucks and is the primary reason PC sales have fallen so drastically around the world. End users didn't like it so they stopped buying it while enterprise users stuck with what they already had rather than embrace this turd of a program. 8.1 is an improvement over the completely dysfunctional 8.0 but only slightly; it at least restores basic functionality for end users but that's hardly a reason to spend money on a product. "Hey, it is no longer a complete piece of crap... Just mostly a piece of crap."

Sure, it's an improvement over Windows 8. But for many PC users, Windows 8.1 is a clumsy hybrid that's a pain to navigate.

Anybody here actually using linux to run any old windows game with Wine? I use an XP machine because my gaming time is too scarce to justify new software purchases and there is no incentive (apart from the impending demise of support) to use windows 7, much less windows 8.

I wonder why HC is so certain that use of XP has been indefensible?

              Good ****ing riddance.

We just expunged GDI+ from our codebase and replaced it with Direct2D. DirectX9 has been replaced by 10.1.

              Life is good again.

I switched away from XP back in...2007 I think? Yeah.

Good riddance. If I had to restrict myself to a single criticism of XP it would be security.

Keep an XP computer going and leave it off the network?

MS have announced they'll bring back the full start menu in the future.

The start menu (or lack thereof) is not the problem with Win8.

hint: (it's the ugly Metro tile touchscreen UI)
To us, it is the BEAST.

                        That's the same thing.
The only time a desktop user ever sees the ugly Metro tile touchscreen UI is because there's no real start menu.

I say this as a daily Win8.1 user.

Damn. I thought avoiding the awful UI was at least an option.

                          Win8/8.1

Yeah, you could do that. If it never, ever, ever, ever is connected to the internet then you could safely continue to use XP. We're talking not even connected to a network which is connected to the internet though so what's the point? Either junk that ancient beast or just install a different operating system (again, linux would work well even on really old computers).

It's nice that they admitted they totally ****ed up and even fired Steve Balmer over it because the **** up was huge but I still can't forgive them. Win8 will still be a worthless piece of crap even if it because a marginally more useful piece of crap because normal people can now actually understand how to use basic functions once again. I seriously hate this new Samsung laptop my work has foisted upon me and would gladly burn it in the night fires to appease R'hllor and I don't even like R'hllor.
