  • I've been following that strategy for a good decade and a half. I figure if I keep at it, it's bound to work at some point.

    • When I first came here, this was all swamp. Everyone said I was daft to build a castle on a swamp, but I built in all the same, just to show them. It sank into the swamp. So I built a second one. That sank into the swamp. So I built a third. That burned down, fell over, then sank into the swamp.

It will not. Can you cure cancer by not receiving treatment? You need to get help immediately. I don't know what Mobius is talking about. Not all of us have demons; very few of us do. You are not like the rest of us going through life without treatment for a sickness we don't have. You actually have issues and need to get them addressed and fixed.

You do not have them under control. Under control would mean you live a happy and fulfilling life. Your demons control you. And they will continue to control you until you get treatment.

              • So now you are making light of your mental illness? You cry out about how terrible your desires are and then laugh it off when someone tells you to get help?

No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

                  • Btw, Speer, my low opinion of myself was cemented a very long time ago, so you're not making it worse in any way, but in general your tactic here would be considered thoroughly unhelpful, and possibly even quite harmful, by mental health practitioners. Telling people who need help that they are different, that they're not like everybody else, that they need to get help immediately before the justice system gets involved... that's a fabulous way of making a person feel even more isolated, even more like they need to hide who they are, even more like they need to avoid treatment for fear of the consequences.

I'm not laughing off the idea that I need to get help. But yes, I am making light of my mental illness. One of my problems (in general) is that I think all of my problems are much worse than they actually are, and this overreaction on my part is detrimental. Humor helps combat that.

                      • Judging by how you were beating yourself up simply because it was better for you (as is with a very large percentage of the general populace) to stop seeing a girl you were still in love with, I'd say yes on the exageration part.

                        • And how much good has that mental health philosophy done you? There is no reason to coddle you and lie to you. You need direct intervention immediately.

Quite a lot. The reason I've been in treatment for the last year and a half is because I finally realized that it's not actually productive to be ashamed of an illness.

Oh? What would happen if I didn't get direct intervention immediately?
