  • It makes perfect sense to cover contraceptives if you think family planning is a good idea. Just because something doesn't fit in with your hypothetical ideal of what insurance should be doesn't mean it doesn't make sense.
How on earth is that relevant to a cover/not cover argument? I could argue that family planning isn't a good idea ergo it shouldn't be covered.

    • Childhood vaccines, including (but not limited to): DTaP, IPV, HiB, HepB, HepA, Rotavirus, Pneumococcus, MMR, Varicella, Influenza
Influenza is a bullcrap vaccine. I'd cover DTaP, MMR, IPV. Rest is no.

Asthma treatment, including (but not limited to): bronchodialators, inhaled corticosteroids, equipment to adequately deliver said medications
I'd lean on the side of no, because asthma is a lifelong condition and broncodilalators, cortosteriods, would be routine care for someone with Asthma.

Allergy treatment, including (but not limited to): over-the-counter antihistamines, both short and long-acting, nasal corticosteroids, leukotriene inhibitors
Can it be available OTC? Then it doesn't need to be covered.

Various treatments for various infectious diseases, such as several different classes of oral and topical antibiotics
How expensive are antibiotic regimes? They are overprescribed too.

The point of catastrophic insurance is just that - to provide coverage for catastrophic care. People can pay for these things reasonably out of pocket. Surgery? No.

Now if there were insurers who had an ideological reason to not cover it, would it make sense to mandate it be covered?
Again, this is a case of looking at the risk after the fact. Whether the meds are cheap or not does not matter. What matters is that the population starts without the condition and that the odds of people getting the condition are less than 1.

I don't accept the premise that the odds of people getting the condition should be the sole factor.

If it's better for more people and cheaper than treating the condition, then mandating its provision by the system should be fair game. cf vaccines.
