The only other one I can think of was Battle: Los Angeles and that movie was ****ing awful. And Independence Day was mostly USAF. On the other hand, Man of Steel was US Army/USAF.
False.
Independence Day was all about the Marines and featured VMFA-314, which Will Smith's character was a part of. The Air Force doesn't even fly F/A-18's. In the movie, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs was a Marine and the president was a Gulf War Marine pilot. Independence Day was Marines.
Marines fought aliens in Battle: LA, Avatar, Doom, and of course, the Alien/Aliens series, in which they are called United States Colonial Marines.

I seem to recall the president saying he was USAF in that movie. Nevertheless,

Great, they've been in all the ****ing awful movies The first two Alien movies weren't awful, I'll grant you that, but the Marines mostly got slaughtered there, so it's not really something to be proud of.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Although I have to admit, however bad Avatar was, Al can at least be proud of the portrayal of the Marines nobly using natural resources for the purposes of improving the welfare of all, instead of letting the selfish ****ing blue rabbits hoard it.

Nukes will not produce mushroom clouds in space. That is an atmospheric phenomenon only. You can develop artillery that fires into space. Look up rail gun (and also Gerald Bull).

he managed to defeat the alien menace despite being a US Marine. That's overcoming adversity
And here I thought the troll was him coming from Philly.

Explosives in general would be less effective in space, but nukes would still ruin your day if they were close enough.

My thought is, if they were out to explore earth, they would probably try to land in an area near civilization, but far enough away to avoid too much contact -
North Korea.
There's nothing wrong with the dream, my friend, the problem lies with the dreamer.

Gamma rays and EMP can be stopped or greatly attenuated with a plasma shield.

Not get vaporized and nukes don't really go together. Rail guns would be the way to go.

The President was a gulf war veteran in Independence Day and since the Marines did **** all worthwhile in that I'm going to assume he's air force.
Marines have been in a lot of movies because, after all, their motto is "Every Marine a PAO."
Gotta hand 'em this though: USMC aviation's greatest accomplishment is getting six Harriers blown up on the ground by a bunch of illiterate goat-****ers, which is pretty goddamn impressive.

Marine aviation pioneered the concept of close air support during the Banana Wars and air assault/vertical envelopment (troop insertion via helicopter) during Korea.

They also seem to have pioneered getting their air support pwned by a bunch of cavemen.
Don't underestimate the Mujihadeen. That was a point of emphasis at TBS to not underestimate an enemy in an asymmetrical war. In many ways, the cards are stacked in their favor and they can be very clever and skilled at what they do. They're not cavemen.
