  • So suppose alien craft orbit earth

And they're up to no good, demanding tribute or pushing unequal treaties on us, how much of humanity's arsenal of missiles can be fired at them? Would it be possible to aim ICBMs at a target in space?

Depends on what orbit they're in.

Apogee on ICBMs is pretty respectable (>500km). There is a reasonable chance that you could detonate close enough to something orbiting at a lower altitude and do significant damage.

For anything further up you would need to mount a nuke on a satellite launch vehicle.

The Soviets did this, it was called Fractional Orbital Bombardment.

Also, putting a nuclear warhead in a satellite launch vehicle would not be difficult. Plenty of warheads in the US enduring stockpile are small enough to fit both weight/volume-wise.

I suppose that's not possible on short notice.

A brief search indicates the speed of ICBMs tend to be below escape velocity.

I guess SAM are off the table as well. Very disappointing.

Depends on the SAM. SM-3s can get pretty high up. The USAF also has ASAT missiles launched from F-15 fighters that can hit targets in orbit.

But how many of those do we have?

Nukes are ineffective against aliens as demonstrated in Mars Attacks.

Nukes in space behave quite differently than nukes in an atmosphere. Very limited blast, but high intensity gamma radiation and a good EMP. Both gamma rays and the EMP could be blocked with a plasma shield.

If they're so technologically advanced that they're capable of interstellar flight would we want to piss them off? They might simply dodge our missiles, then throw big rocks at us.

I hate to break it to you guys, but there is no galactic treaty banning mass drivers.
