As I said, I don't have a problem with them stopping them to find out what was going on, I don't think it's even unreasonable for them to call the girl's parents. It's their actions after that point that are problematic.

As I am a firm student of the Chris Rock school, "how not to get your ass kicked by the police", I did not smart off at the cops. I just let them search everytime. I did once get arrested (and just about shot), when visiting a family friend at 11pm at night.

They lived right next door to me and the area is quite rural, so I just parked on the side of their property instead of in the driveway, across from my house. Went in, ate dinner. Came out at 11pm to see cops outside. I had been canvassing for the HST campaign and had all my signatures in the car. One of the folks I had approached earlier in the day had reported a 'prowler' to the police that was canvassing the neighbourhood and he had spotted me in his backyard after dark. Left a description of me and my car. It had taken them 3 hours to find me (as I had packed up for the day) and the homeowner had called after I had finished and packed up and gone to see my friends.

They towed my car and I was trying to show the cop that I had just been canvassing and had my credentials in the car. That just about got me shot as the cop didn't want me going back into the car once he arrested me. After my friends (who had been my former teacher and known me for 20+ years), came down to the police station with the officer, I was released and no charges were filed. They still impounded my car and I had to pay to get it out.

I agree that it seems a bit excessive. But I do want to make the point that informing the mother that the men were black is indicative of a reasonable piece of information that the cop was reacting to, not evidence of prejudice.

Considering the men were her daughter's dance partner and teacher and the mother had written a letter to let people know the dance teacher was legitimately permitted to look after her daughter it would be pretty shocking if she didn't know they were black.

I think the way they behaved after confirming the girl was being legitimately looked after by her dance teacher and partner was completely different to the way they'd have behaved if the two men had been white.

Right, cause the woman didn't know the race of the two men whom she personally knew and gave permission, so the cops just had to mention that they were black.

I can't help but think that if we were a little less tolerant of a society, then this would have been a lot better for everyone. The cops could have freely told the mother that their daughter was safely in the custody of two gay black men ... :thanksmrfun:

Is there an officially recognized permission slip? I don't think a hand written note would be sufficient since it would be so easy to fake.
