Depends. Coming back to Canada a la Cast Away? I would find it enormously difficult. Having been married and coming back to Canada after being away for 5 years?

Would I expect myself to wait 5 years if I were the one waiting? Yes, yes I would.

Would I expect of her what I expect of myself? No. I'd probably do exactly what was done in Cast Away, although I seriously doubt my wife would entertain the notion of coming back to me. The problem is the Church.

Technically, if I were married, I would be married in the Church - and that marriage wouldn't change if I came back. Church rules would say that she is still my wife and would have to come back to me. So it makes it enormously more complicated. I don't know what I'd do.

A la Cast Away - I believe my duty as the one left behind is to wait. I incur no problems waiting. For my wife, I would not expect her to wait but if I were to survive, Church and canon law says we are still married.

That's not really the Golden Rule, at least not for me, as I would feel that I had a duty to wait for my wife but I would not feel she had a duty to wait for me.
