Actually the Catholic Church is perfectly fine with government programs designed to help the poor. The US Bishops pushed hard for the ACA prior to not being able to have a carve out for the contraception portions - though they are more than fine with national health care programs (after all, the Old Testament has plenty of rules in it for helping out the poor, such as gleaning, which were mandates, not you can do it if you want).

And yeah, when it comes to homosexuality, abortion, birth control, and so on, Church doctrine isn't changing one iota.

A couple years ago I gave $140 to the Salvation Army (the contents of my wallet).

    Spoiler:
because some people were picketing the folks collecting the money at my school over gay marriage and I wanted to piss them off

    I was successful

    Pope condemns abortion today: http://www.catholicnews.com/data/sto...ns/1303991.htm

Pope called gay marriage a plot by Satan three years ago: http://www.lifesitenews.com/news/arc...0/jul/10070902

Nothing's changed, he's just a lot better at making the message sound mellow.

    No we mean exactly
pretending to be a Christian yet showing absolutely none of the humanity, humility and goodness that Christ was the supposed living embodiment of?
I think we're a better judge of what we mean than you. There are plenty of people that have the same beliefs as you that I don't dislike. They're just not jerks about it. You use your religion as an excuse to be a jerk about it. That's why you're disliked here. But if you want to think it's because of your beliefs, that's fine. But don't tell us what we mean. We pretty solid on that one.

And this is where you should take the cue from the pope. He's not saying that those things are OK, he's just saying that it shouldn't be such a focus (another way of saying that Catholics shouldn't be such dicks about it)

Just remind me exactly where the bible prohibits contraception and abortion.

Honesty, humility and compassion would be the first three that jump immediately to mind, although there are probably many more.

Christ was the biggest socialist out there, yet you don't actually give a **** about that. Like too many American 'Christians' you find stupid little ambiguous passages in the bible and twist them to fit your own desired ends. Just like those ****ers who try and claim that Christ loved rich people.

Of course I praise liberal causes over Christianity, in case it's slipped your attention I'm a social liberal and am not a Christian. As for praising conservatives, you must have forgotten the thread where I eulogized the legacy of Mrs Thatcher. The difference is that I don't recognize America's brand of selfish, soulless right wing extremists as actually being conservative. There was a time when the left wing in the UK used to demonize UK conservatives and make out like they were monsters. Even in their most vicious and dishonest attacks, they never came close to describing anything as foul and repulsive as the GOP is today.

I'd say Ben is disliked because he takes a dogmatic approach to some issues and is dishonest in discussing them, and many others.

What Christian teachings have I undermined?

, by pretending to be a Christian yet showing absolutely none of the humanity, humility and goodness that Christ was the supposed living embodiment of?

Yes contrary to his belief that we all hate him for his Christian values, this is indeed the true reason why. His denials are comical since we're the better judge of why we hate him. But everyone is entitled to their own delusions. I have a few myself.

This pope has figured out how to make people think he's making radical policy shifts without actually changing anything. I'm impressed.
