At this point it seems like conservatives (I would bet it is primarily religious conservatives but for now will just use the generic term "conservatives") are just throwing a temper tantrum like a spoiled child.

Many military benefits are earmarked specifically to married people and cannot be disbursed to single people. If you are not married in the eyes of your state you are not married for the purposes of military compensation. States have leeway over how their soldiers are paid but the admin personnel do not.

There are several European countries where atheists are the majority yet we have not seen them engage in any persecutions of religious people.

It's a free country. I don't see why a Christian should have to compromise their beliefs. This works both ways as well. A Christian should be able to run a bakery without some gay couple throwing a snit fit and suing them.
