Unions certainly played a part in refusing "to adapt to the change, trying to keep service levels the same (or rather being way, way to slow to cut) even as the city lost 3/4ths of its population."
“It is no use trying to 'see through' first principles. If you see through everything, then everything is transparent. But a wholly transparent world is an invisible world. To 'see through' all things is the same as not to see.”

The only thing I got from your previous post is that you don't know what "one horse town" means.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Well doh! Why didn't they think of that?

This is a bit like saying the answer to chronic food insecurity is "just buy more food." IIUC, high tax rates, the poor economy, and various social problems have already driven out a lot of people--the sort of wealthy people who can afford to move, and talented people who can find opportunities elsewhere. The impoverished remainder cannot possibly pay off a mountain of debt incurred by a population twice their size.

In the past 6 months 4 of my insulin-dependent diabetic patients have wound up in the ICU because the Commonwealth of Virginia abruptly cut their food stamps. They went into hypoglycemic shock.

Isn't that an argument that your patients need better financial management skills rather than everyone else needing to pay more to feed them?

The tax base has been destroyed. It would be blood from a stone to raise taxes at this point.

Middle class black = white, as far as I'm concerned. Detroit is a ****hole. People who have their lives together moved out. That is the sum total of what I mean by white flight.

Oh for god's sake. If they couldn't find enough ****ing sugar to eat, there's more going on here than not enough food stamps.

Of course but that is entirely different from his claim that everything was all the fault of unions.

In this case I'm using it to describe a town completely, utterly, totally economically dependent on just one industry. An industry which has been in decline for 40+ years.

This is nonsense. Americans haven't been buying fewer cars. They've been buying fewer union-made cars. These days, cars are made in the South by Toyota or Hyundai, instead of GM and Ford in the North.
