Or you could try teaching the kids what you think they actually ought to know, but endeavor to make it genuinely interesting. Right now, at least in the district I sub, the common core (whateverTF that is) prescribes a series of stunningly boring lessons apparently concocted by committees of people who have never been children. So, when sixth-grade history covers ancient China, do they mention the gruesome punishments, the foot-binding, the Hsiong Nu depredations, the repeating crossbows? Maybe mention the Romance of the Three Kingdoms? Nope. They hear lots and lots about Shi Huangdi's bureaucracy and public works projects, though. That ****er sure dug him a lot of canals. But even in the rare event that a student actually cares intensely about old Chinese canals, the teacher can't pause a second to go into more detail for that student's benefit since the whole curriculum is ridiculously centralized.

lol. Of course BK is enjoying his fantasy. You could never get a class full of students to think that's interesting, because it just isn't.

Make up your mind and pick a consistent romanization of Chinese words.

English spelling is grossly inconsistent even for actual English words. I'm not giving the Middle Kingdom one measly vowel of special treatment.

History was far more interesting than math and science classes.

We don't really teach kids based on what they'd find the most interesting - otherwise we'd have sex ed all day.

Foreign language courses would consist of how to use foreign curse words in a sentence correctly.

Then you can explain to me the difference between tropical and sidereal years and the significance to the development of the calendar.

They found it interesting. I think the favourite one is the class on all the saints and stories as to how they died. They liked that one.

Oh, no wait. They loved the Jeopardy style end of the year test. With me as the host. That was fun.

Sure, some of the classes are not all that interesting. It's hard to teach the trinity in an interesting fashion. I am going to see what I can do next year to work on that one to make it better. It was my least liked class.

I encourage the students to give me feedback.

Both are ~365 days. The difference has no relevance to most people's lives. Yeah, that's a really great idea for making school more engaging and interesting for bored high schoolers.

My job is to teach history. The change in the calendar is essential information. Why for instance there are 24 hours and 60 minutes and 60 seconds?

You don't seem like a very good history teacher.

500 is just a number to kids. It would make no difference if you said '500' as opposed to say, '1500, or even, 1950. It's all the same to them.

So what I do is I start taking away things in the classroom.

What would the world be like in 500? How different is the world then from the world now? Was there an America back then?

Well, that's certainly a lot better than asking students why there are 60 seconds in a minute.

"Kids, this fella in the mosaic here was named Justinian. He was a peasant who became Emperor. His Empress was Theodora, this angry-looking lady here. She started out as a burlesque actress and, depending on which sources you trust, may have at one point lain down on a public stage while trained geese pecked grain off her privates. She was the main reason why he didn't trust that fellow behind the shield there--his name was Belisarius. There was one time they agreed, though. That was when they had these really bad riots from the Blues and Greens, which were like our Republicans and Democrats only they started out as European-style sports hooligans. Anyway, they started rioting and Justinian wanted to run. But she wasn't having any of that, so she had shield-dude take his boys and kill thirty thousand of those euro-chav protester punks in one day. Then Justinian sent him to take over the western world. He might have succeeded, only Theodora kept talking crap about him behind his back so Justinian didn't trust him. Also he was distracted by his wife, who was a total ho-bag. So Justinian wasted ridiculous amounts of money having losers try to do Belisarius's job. He was still a pretty good emperor, though. Moving on, his successor Justin II was literally insane and liked to have his attendants pull him around his rooms in a little cart..."

The only real problem with History is that BFB isn't teaching it. Properly treated, it's a very interesting subject.

EDIT: whoops, I quoted the wrong part of that post. Oh, well.
