Not really. When Enoch Powell uttered his infamous 'Rivers of blood' speech in the 1960s, the party showed him the door. He promptly joined an Ulster Unionist party, which was rather like an extension of the Conservative Party in Northern Ireland, but the remarks he made were the kind of thing Jesse Helms and Strom Thurmond would have thought moderate at most.

Ironically, Powell was one of the ministers who avidly recruited workers from the Caribbean to come and fill vacancies in post-war Britain. I never understood when some rightwingers used the different culture tag to discriminate against black men and women from the Caribbean- they were for the most part Protestants, played cricket, read the Bible, believed in hard work and education and corporal punishment...
