Pope Francis Condemns 'Slave Labor' In Bangladesh: 'Goes Against God'

Pope Francis on Wednesday condemned as "slave labour" the work conditions of victims of a factory collapse in Bangladesh in which more than 400 people have been found dead, Vatican radio reported.

"A headline that really struck me on the day of the tragedy in Bangladesh was 'Living on 38 euros a month'. That is what the people who died were being paid. This is called slave labour," the pope was quoted as saying at a private mass.

"Today in the world this slavery is being committed against something beautiful that God has given us -- the capacity to create, to work, to have dignity. How many brothers and sisters find themselves in this situation!" he said.

"Not paying fairly, not giving a job because you are only looking at balance sheets, only looking at how to make a profit. That goes against God!" he was quoted as saying.

"There are many people who want to work but cannot. When a society is organised in a way that not everyone is given the chance to work, that society is not just," he said.
A pope who actually follows Jesus teachings? Could this mean the death of Catholicism in America?!?

The Pope is right. Shut down the factories and let them go back to whatever they were doing before they decided to work in factories. Then they'll be free.

He just wants more impoverished. The only way the Church grows is by preying on the weak and needy.

There are slaves in the bible... maybe the pope should try reading it.

Christianity is kind of like true communism. If people would stick to the morals of Christianity then it would probably work. Unfortunately people are people and will not do this. Accordingly, capitalism is the next best thing and the only viable alternative.

I'd very much hope that one day we'll come up with something far better. If capitalism it the pinnacle of human society then we may as well give up now.

Conservatism in my country is about aspiration not about blind dogmatic adherence to an existing ideology.

No, you're not a conservative, even for a Brit. You can't hide behind the "oh we're all lefties on this side of the pond!" thing when you have beliefs that would put you pretty far on the left of the Democratic Party. The US really isn't that far right of the UK. It's just not. Let me put it this way. You also wouldn't be a conservative in Canada.

Even if it is the "pinnacle" now (which I think it is) doesn't mean we should give up and quit striving for something better. Is it not man's nature to seek? Who knows? Maybe the Star Trek universe will come to pass one day.

                      Ok, let's see..

Me: Grew up in UK under Mrs Thatcher, followed British politics from being a young teenager, considered Mrs T an ideological role model (although disagreed with her on various social issues). Studied the shifting ideology of the Conservative party throughout the wilderness years and how it had to adapt to realign with the countries desire for increased social liberalism. Voted Conservative in every election since I was old enough to vote.

You: Privileged young kid who's entire knowledge of UK politics could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

Did I miss anything, or would you like to lecture me some more about a subject I've been personally involved with for several decades?

HC is right, kentonio. You aren't really a conservative unless you believe the following:

                          Socialism = Fascism = Islam
Any semblance of government = socialism/fascism
The world is better off with rich people running everything.
Money can only be earned. So if you have a lot of money, you earned it.
Poor people are to blame for being poor.
People have 100% control over everything in their lives... so if something bad happens, it's your fault.
Earning money from investments is work.
To us, it is the BEAST.
