There are some pretty crucial distinctions between the circumstances surrounding the Texan independence war and the ACW. In 1835, conservative forces in Mexico gained control and Santa Anna destroyed the 1824 Constitution and established a dictatorship. In 1860, an anti-slavery candidate who took the position that slavery should not be allowed in US territories won the US presidential election. If you conclude that slavery was crucial in Texas's secession from the US, a conclusion supported by the Declaration of the Causes which Impel the State of Texas to Secede from the Federal Union, that doesn't demonstrate that slavery caused Texas to rebel against the Mexican dictatorship. For what it's worth, there were rebellions in other parts of Mexico at the same time- did they have anything to do with slavery?

For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

While you're at it, remind him that the "I couldn't care less what you think" capital is centered where I'm sitting.Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

I guess a lot of Texans are unpatriotic, and are "American" in name only.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

You aren't even a real texan. You are a ****ing convert. What was so bad about your old life that you had to ditch everything? Religion? Where you are from? Everything.
Maybe you are a spy or something.
I used to be a liberal atheist from Northern British Columbia studying rocket science. Now I'm a Catholic history teacher choosing to live in Texas.
Why did I change? Because I got up one morning and realized I was unhappy with what I was doing with my life. I made an inventory, and I looked at the people who were happy with their life and were satisfied with what they were doing.
Why Christianity - because those were the happy folks and I realized I wanted to be happy like them. Why History? Because I enjoy the subject. It's always been a love for me. It was hard giving up on rocket science, but I was the last cut from my program. Six survived and I was number seven. I was never the strongest student in my school, I just worked my *** off. It opened doors for me at the time, and at the time, I wasn't sure about how to take advantage of those doors. I wanted to be more like the people I admired.
Why did I leave BC for Texas? Ask joncha. I used to live in a ****ty room in crackshack centre Vancouver. I'm a country boy, not a city slicker. I'd been in Vancouver for 8 years when I finally left. I had an invite to come down to the United States for the very first time - there's a thread about that here. I had a blast.
The happiest time of my whole entire life was here in Texas.
I had to go back to finish up my school - and I was unhappy with returning. There wasn't a day that didn't go by that I didn't wish I were back in Texas. So - here I am. I'm finally living the life that *I* want to live. I'm not all the way there yet - still want to get married and have a kiddo. But, I've wanted to become an American citizen almost as long as I've been Catholic.
I basically turned my life over from 19 to 24. The rest of it has just been seeing through the promises I made to myself back then.
The funny thing - Poly is part of my life *after* the change, not before. So Poly can't really see the changes that were going on at the time.Scouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.
