  • That I don't understand at all. 1990 is when people should've gotten drunk (or when the Tories lost power a few years later). Why are they celebrating someone dying? That's just dumb.

Edit: That looks rather like a British Onion, also

Hopefully they won't start any celebratory riots. Some of the lefty types in Britain seem to think starting fires and smashing store windows is how to bring about positive change.

"Bottom right hand corner" is the southeast. The southwest corner doesn't have much in it though Cornwall is home to the native British wine industry and I hear land's end is a nice place to visit. Devon also is known for its scrumpy and that is a fact which makes it near and dear to my heart even if that love has occasionally damaged my ceiling.

            • The Shia resistance was not a capable force. That's why they got crushed. Look at Syria.
The 2 are not analogous, Syria's infrastructure was intact and Schwarzkopf got snookered (his words) in the cease fire negotiations allowing Saddam the use of his helo force to bypass downed and destroyed bridges and roads. We let Saddam put down the rebellion after encouraging it, that is not the action of a President who had decided to get rid of Saddam.

No matter how much people disagree with her policies, she cared about Britain and was willing to face the consequences of doing things that were endlessly difficult. Personally I think she went too far on various occasions,
France managed it so did Sweden and Holland and Spain and Italy so don't tell me it couldn't have been done.

                    • We just got out of a bloody war we shouldn't have fought and Carter not only avoided getting us into more wars, he got the Russians to invade Afghanistan and started arming the resistance. Reagan followed Carter's lead and the Soviets collapsed within a decade due in large part to the Afghan war - Carter and Reagan were better at foreign policy than the 7 presidents before and after them. The last 2 decades have been a disaster and it began with Maggie and Bush. And the 2nd Bush was dumb enough to follow the Russians into Afghanistan.
Harder to keep up with a nation that believes in strengthening itself than one that believes in 'managing the decline'. The US had a large economic recovery under Reagan. For the Russians - it was the last straw.

Russia was pretty much doomed when their abortion rate was so high. Far higher than it was in the west. We're seeing the results right now - as scary as Putin is - he's a shadow of his former self.

The situation was very different to those countries. You can't just say they all had periods of poor economic performance and assume that means they were all dealing with identical problems.

We use them every day, sticking to an unwritten code of behaviour, which seems to reveal an acute discomfort.

Now we are in uncharted territory. New entrants to the lift will need to size up the situation when the doors slide open and then act decisively. Once in, for most people the protocol is simple - look down, or examine your phone.
One day Canada will rule the world, and then we'll all be sorry.
