We let Saddam put down the rebellion after encouraging it, that is not the action of a President who had decided to get rid of Saddam.

Once upon a time I had exactly that opinion until I came to understand quite how far that would tip the balance against working people. The human cost is just too high to give corporations that much power.

It's analogous to Communism failing. Perhaps it never has existed (or ever could) in pure form... but the policies that resulted from politicians who championed the ideology have failed... or produced abysmal results.
