I try to avoid hysteria and outrage in general; they're self-indulgent, cloud the intellect and lead to rash behavior while accomplishing nothing in particular.

Some people are under the mistaken belief that they can shame the RCC into apologizing if the harp on the scandal long enough. Other people are trolling.

By way of comparison, Germany went out of its way to apologize for the holocaust after the war (granted that not everybody in Germany was happy about apologizing, but in part this is because the malcontents were unhappy that they were about to be executed for war crimes). Now if Germany does something good bad or questionable and somebody responds with "blah blah blah NAZIS blah blah blah" then they're ignored/ridiculed. The RCC could do the same thing in response to criticism, but they haven't and probably won't.

Yeah, you've got a point there. From what little I've heard of this pope, he might actually do something about it; he can be outspoken and, as one conservative Catholic blog pointed out, named himself after the strongest Western critic of the papacy prior to Martin Luther. An even more conservative Catholic blog is freaking out about him being an accursed modernist scum, which I take as a tentative good sign.

Apparently is also very big into social justice (very good).

Don't forget, I read Rod Dreher too (note in passing: RD left the RCC because of the scandal. He still gets quite upset about it. But even he has complained about the scandal being dragged into every single RCC story.). But that's another good sign: he doesn't seem callous. But even before he tries to tackle Pedogate, I think he might have to muck out the Vatican stable, judging by recent news out of there.
