I was lucky. I had parents who cared enough to ensure that I got an education. Was I treated unfairly? Yes, absolutely I was. But I got a better deal than the folks who never got the opportunity.



I don't regard the 'help' as 'helpful'. Given these statistics here - surely you can see why? Deaf students aren't getting an education despite tons of money being thrown at the problem.

As with any hearing student, if you don't get an education it's your own damn fault. You think you were treated unfairly, although your education costed much more than the education of hearing students. Without it you would have likely had to hire private tutors and put in more effort. But you got the help, which you are totally ungrateful for. And to top it off you work to make sure that other disadvantaged people do not recieve help. You're the worst type of person I know.

Insofar as black students were kept apart from white ones, they could dump them in the ****ty schools without affecting white kids. Which is what they did. Which is what special ed does now...

Schools, libraries, the job market, movie theaters, restaurants, hospitals, hotels, railroad cars, you name it, you had one setup for whites and one for "coloreds" who were nothing but the servants. Want to eat out? Eat in back with the colored help. Housing? There's plenty of places for rent down in ******town. Want to go to the golf course? Ok, and what is happening with deaf kids? If they cannot read at a 5th grade level, are they not being kept out of hearing society? Schools? Higher education? The job market? What use is a library if they cannot read? What use is a movie theatre when they cannot hear? Restaurants, if they cannot afford them? Hotels, if they cannot afford them?

And what do we have now? One setup for hearing folks, and one setup for deaf folks. We even make sure they are taught to sign so that they stay in the deaf ghetto and cannot even communcate with society at large. And best of all, like the man said, "Ignorance is bliss".

I rest my case - the evils of segregation is that it stripped black people of opportunity, of access to a quality education. And we are doing the same today with deaf folks. We have succeeded in successfully stripping them of an education by arguing that deaf people belong in the deaf ghetto.

Wait. Let me get this straight. You don't support any special education funding for deaf students?

I could quote Dr. King here. In order for deaf people to participate fully in the community at large, they have to be integrated. There is no other way. They should be mainstreamed and not left in special education, and it should begin early - because that is when most of the damage is being done. I believe they should have the same access that everyone has to public education, to the same teachers, to the same classrooms, and yes, to the same washrooms and drinking fountains as the 'normals'.

Cost per student per year in my district is now about 9k. Looking some stuff up speech therapy up there is about 50 dollars for an hour session, once a month. That adds up, to around 8 hours per year, about 400 dollars per year.

I'm not sure if it was covered by the school, but if it was covered by the school, then that would mean that the cost of my education was about 4.3 percent extra than the usual student, ceteris paribus.
