Okay, I just skimmed Wiki to find out what that whole thing was about. Perhaps I misread, but it seems:

1. Mexico invited gringo settlers to come in and farm, under certain conditions, e.g. no slavery, and they would grow certain crops for Mexico.
2. Gringo settlers ignored the rules because they wanted to use Mexican land to grow valuable cotton. Possibly with slaves, the records are unclear.

I think the record is pretty clear abouyt some of them owning slaves.

And what you miss out, Elok, is that Santa Anna made himself dictator of Mexico. He tore up the Mexican constitution. There were other rebellions at the same time, the Texans just happened to be the only successful one, largely in part because of the Alamo. It was a futile, useless struggle if the goal was the preservation of the Alamo and it's garrison - it was an incredible success in that it bought time for Houston.

I'd make a terrible soldier. I'd be permanantly disqualified either for CDN forces or here.

(1) Pure tone at 500, 1000, and 2000 cycles per second of not more than 30 decibels (dB) on the average (each ear), with no individual level greater than 35dB at these frequencies.

Mine at 2k both ears is around 90+ decibels or so, and forget about anything higher. 1k is at 50 decibels. The only thing I'd pass is anything under 800 Hz.

At +10 diopters I also fail the visual acuity requirements...
