The thing about the Gripen is that it's particularly suited to being navalized, since it already has very good short runway performance. AFAIK on a STOBAR carrier the only thing that's needed is a stronger tailhook and capability of withstanding landing at a higher sink rate.

That and catapult launch gear, otherwise, the max ordnance load on takeoff will have to be reduced, and you'd have some compromise of carrier ops and design.

And ****, Lockheed sold the US government on a hell of a lot of unproven stuff with the F-35.

That's because a majority of the House and Senate Armed Services committee sucks LM lobbyist dick. The F35 will probably never get straightened out because it's so drastically overpriced to begin with and there won't be enough of them or a big enough role for them to justify the time and money.

I'm half a mind to ****can the F-35 right now and just navalize the F-22s and give em bombs. Only keep the F-35 around for the F-35B, **** the other variants.

Or just toss the whole thing and start over. LM wouldn't mind. It's funny, when I worked for USG, one of my roles was to recommend forward year price adjustments on "my" contractors, which included LM to the tune of about 1.1 billion in DoD and DHS task orders. When it was time to look at the forward price adjustment, it was funny how "nice" and "friendly" all these LM people were, up to Senior VP level. Back then (2004-2005) LM still had cost plus contracts dated back to the first Reagan administration that hadn't been formally closed out, although the contract was no longer active - because they were sitting on likely billions of taxpayer dollars they'd gotten in prior forward year adjustments under cost plus, and if closeout was performed, they'd owe all that money back to the government.
