Isn't Saab navalizing the Gripen so that it can land on carriers so they can bid to the Indians and Brazilians?

It would be an interesting conversion project, since airframe stresses are significantly higher. Presumably they would have some sort of rework around the arrestor gear and to accomodate additional compression and shear stresses around the nose gear strut attachment.

It's a chicken and egg, too - would they spend the money making a bunch of conversions and carrier testing them in the hope of getting a contract? Or have the best Svenska salesbabes on earth to get a contract for an unproven conversion to carrier ops?

I have a hard time believing China isn't going to get in a fight with somebody soon. Every single one of East Asia's diplomatic relationships has, AFAIK, been permanently set to "furious" for the past several thousand years, and China seems to be building some sort of military capability. Plus there's that thing with those rocks Japan wants. Apparently there's oil involved.

Yeah, given how aggressive China are being to not only Japan but most of her southern neighbours, some kind of conflict seems likely.

Why? They were fighting full shooting wars during the Cold War while the west was worrying about reds under the bed. China vs Russia is far more likely than the USA fighting either.

Definitely less likely by a huge margin. No-one screws with nuclear powers if they can just ****-kick a minor nation instead.

I doubt China will screw with anyone major for quite a while. Right now, direct confrontation costs them too much, especially if they get into a pissing match with a US ally, but they can play little games to stir up some nationalism and maintain popular control as their economy goes through some transitions and a lot of people see themselves left out of the prosperity. A little saber rattling for domestic show is good, real conflict is not, and they're smart enough to guage just how far they can push. China will become dangerous when they transition from a primary export economy to one driven primarily by domestic consumption. Once China's economy is not heavily dependent on exports, then they are in much more of a position to do whatever they want.

The thing about the Gripen is that it's particularly suited to being navalized, since it already has very good short runway performance. AFAIK on a STOBAR carrier the only thing that's needed is a stronger tailhook and capability of withstanding landing at a higher sink rate.

And ****, Lockheed sold the US government on a hell of a lot of unproven stuff with the F-35.
