So we should think it acceptable that someone with a masters degree in history would state that NYC is the capital of New York? That's a waste of 6 years of schooling.Also, MrFun was a history major, not a geography major. I don't see why the two need to be linked. Gosh, which is what happens to be the case. West Virginia didn't exist prior to the civil war.The only way you can get "the mean center of population hasn't been in the South since the Civil War" is if you classify West Virginia as part of the South but classify Kentucky as not being part of the South.

I'm not sure where the center of population was in 1860. In 1790 the Mississippi was the western boundary, and Virginia was the most populous state, so the District of Columbia may have been near the population center. By 1860 the western boundary of the US was the Pacific Oceanm but the population west of the Mississippi was miniscule and the population of the north was nearly twice that of the south. I'd guess that the population center would have been in Ohio or Kentucky. Does the population in territories count?"I say shoot'em all and let God sort it out in the end!Comment
