I recognize that PA's state capital is one of the ones no one knows, because it's not a real city, it's just that I currently am residing in Pittsburgh, so for whatever reason this is extra funny to me.

According to this- it was Pike County, Ohio. The first time it was in the Union. 70 miles south of Columbus, 105 miles North and West of Charleston, 114 miles East of Cincinnati, 140 miles Northeast of Lexington and 50 miles North and West of the Confederacy. In 1850, it was about 100 miles NE of Charleston in Virginia.

I used to know them all off by heart. Don't know why, just do. Come to think of it, it was finding out that the state capital of Texas was Austin and then realising that virtually every major US state's capital is some no name town in the middle of nowhere and thinking it would be cool to know what they all were...

So far I've been to Boston, Honolulu and Phoenix - all ones which buck the aforementioned trend.

I've also stayed the night passing through Harrisburg and passed through Richmond.

So 5 out of 22 states visited. I rest my case.

1. Who cares what the size of the capital is? It's just where the legislature meets and the governor lives. It's not selected for cultural importance, which is a non-issue in terms of how convenient it is for the government to meet there.

2. Wales' capital is a no name town in the middle of nowhere too.

I think only about half the states have nowhere capitals. It doesn't have to be the largest city in the state.

That's going back some years. But in all fairness, it was a pattern so once you saw a few, you could infer the rest.

Actually it's by far the largest city in Wales and in the centre of main populated area of the country. Now if you said Wales was in the middle of nowhere...? But you didn't.

That was the implication. But I can understand an unrefined, uncivilized bumpkin like yourself not being able to understand the more nuanced and subtle facets of the English language.

That's because you come from an inferior country; though being British based you're obviously better than those "other" places. To be fair all other countries are inferior and even the Canuckistanians don't have as many "states", really only the Indians or Chinese more states, but that brings up uncomfortable questions about bigger being better so we will ignore those questions and pretend they never existed. It's best that way.

The only way you can get "the mean center of population hasn't been in the South since the Civil War" is if you classify West Virginia as part of the South but classify Kentucky as not being part of the South.
