People say dumb **** all the time, for instance that inane gun control regulations like an "assault weapons ban" would have stopped this. So the fact that others say other dumb **** like "this is our punishment over school prayer" or whatever is not shocking.

Allegedly the mother began buying guns after divorcing her husband 3 years ago. How many did she think she would need? She bought an assault rifle and apparently a half-dozen 30 round clips. Evidently she was prepared for the Zombie Apocalypse. She ought to have paused for a minute and thought about the desireability of keeping that much firepower at home with her mentally ill son.

First of all, it's not an assault rifle. It's just a rifle. An assault rifle is select-fire. There is no meaningful distinction in function between what you are calling an "assault rifle" and an ordinary hunting rifle. The appearance and ergonomics are slightly different, that is all.

Second, have you considered that maybe she just enjoyed shooting, like every single gun owner on this forum? I will likely purchase (depending on prices) what you call an "assault rifle" probably in the next couple of weeks, not because of zombies, but because they are fun to shoot.
