  • Key word in that is "occasional." In a country of 300 million people this is something that, while sensational, isn't something that should be driving public policy.

      ---> back the actual issue.

      Mexico is not a good example of gun control as they are not in a position to enforce it. You can make any law you want if you can't enforce it its a mess. If the second amendment was repealed I think they would have to go door to door like the census does.
      You'd have to repeal a lot more than the 2nd amendment to be able to search through and confiscate people's property without cause.

        You could make the same argument about the September 11th terrorist attacks. Did it matter that getting killed by a terrorist is extremely unlikely?

        • Wouldn't repealing the second amendment make probable cause then?

            Not as unlikely as you think Homeland Security is working their butts off so we're still alive to argue about such things.

              Are you talking about increasing security restrictions at airports or taking out Al Qaeda? Consider also that that was an attack by a large organized group of people, not some random suicidal psychopath. They attacked us once and if given the opportunity will attack us again.

                  We don't. We love living on the edge of danger, and since we have gun control laws that's how we do it. Maybe we oughta have pen control laws...

                  • With gun control laws criminals, as in, criminal gangs, would still be able to get weapons. But people of a middle class background like this teacher would not be able to, and I think it has been mainly middle class people who have done this shootings at schools and colleges.

                    • Not sure that would make a big difference. Tim McVeigh just used a bomb.

                      Anyway, then the vast majority of middle class gun owners wouldn't be able to get them for totally legitimate reasons, like hunting, target shooting, collecting, and self-defense. The latter of which has been identified by the courts as a constitutional right.

                      • Let's not confalte the right to bear arms with whether or not there should be more measures on control. In fact, most, if not all, of the activities that gun owners state that they would use their guns for would not be affected by more stringent gun control measures, such as restricting concealed weapons and background checks.

                            Yeah, and nobody who is motivated can ever get illegal items. Making drugs illegal has meant that nobody can get them in the US, and prohibition was very effective too.
