Exactly, the employer holds the strings. So what's your problem with unions?

Larger welfare state -> higher effective marginal tax rate -> more deadweight loss
It doesn't necessarily create less deadweight loss than, say, a minimum wage. A mix of different policies is probably better than relying exclusively on a single policy.

By having society expand the amount of jobs (demand for jobs) that are required in the first place such that people are willing to hire even shlubs like you. Once you get in the door act professional, work hard, and get into every bit of training you can. Network, make friends, kiss butt.

Example my Brother. Started as a laborer at a coal fired power plant. Has now been with plant for over 25 years and is shift supervisor for the 1000 Megawatt coal burner. Makes good coin and has leveraged himself into his own business. Plans to retire in one or two years to concentrate on his business, all without a college degree.

How do you get marketable skills if you can't afford college, and don't want to pile up student loan debt?
I don't know only about a thousand trades that are screaming for qualified workers, or you can go to North Dakota and work the gas fields. Thats the non degree'd route. On the other hand if you decide invest in your future and go the degree'd route pick something useful.

The era of monopsony employment is long past, and was always overstated anyway.

Yes it does. This is econ 101. Deadweight losses scale with the square of the tax rate, so they are minimized by making MTRs as uniform as possible. Direct wage-boosting policies like the minimum wage are (nearly) equivalent to a special surtax on the affected professions.

              • If you guys are so hyper-allergic to workers being paid decent wages, then don't ***** and moan about the working poor being on welfare.

I don't. I do complain about the awful structure of most welfare programs, e.g. phase-outs that create high effective MTRs.

Deadweight loss is not simply a product of tax rate but also elasticities. With a land value tax up to a certain point there is no relationship between square of the tax rate and deadweight loss. Demand for labor affected by minimum wage is inelastic.

Ah, my bad. I didn't notice your response to my earlier questions.

Your suggestion about looking into a trade, starting as an apprentice is a good one.
