Lost my entire squad again on a mission I didn't think should be that hard. I think I am going to be spending a LOT of time losing on this level. I guess I'm not playing enough hours yet though... only on game #15 so a bit to go before 20 like some others here... I seem to get to having the OTS now, which just serves to lose me 5 good guys instead of 4. I might actually keep playing this game some, as I had a few more guys (due to injuries, I had more experienced staff, and twice I chose the soldier option because it was best from a panic point of view). But there's no chance I win this game as all of europe is about to leave the project...
This time it was a bomb disposal mission, which usually is the easiest council mission for me. This was in the graveyard, though, which is a lousy place for a bomb disposal mission - no path, all open, so when the bomb was disposed of (which went fine, lost one rookie only due to stupidity) the thin men that dropped in were all over, and I couldn't avoid being flanked. Sigh.

You just need to prepare your men BEFORE the thin men drop in. They come in on both sides of the bomb, so if you get your guys in position in overwatch on that final turn, you can usually kill at least a couple when they first drop in and then finish them off on your next turn.
3 of my guys were in overwatch the first turn... they just missed (actually I killled one thin man, but that wasn't enough). Eight thin men dropped in all about the map (only 3 of them near the bomb, one which was killed by overwatch). Cemetery has ****ty cover... I certainly could've prepped them better though (maybe backing up to a screen edge near the bomb or something; as it was, my guys were all near the middle of the map where the bomb was). Wasn't expecting eight, that was the most I've ever seen (but this is the latest i've ever got this mission).
This is the problem with ironman, of course... one mistake = have to start over again =/

I'm trying to slow down my restart rate a bit and try to fight through major setbacks. Not really working but if I ever manage to pull off a comeback it'll feel satisfying..

The only setbacks you really need to restart on are whole continents lost and 2 squad wipes in close proximity to one another. You can deal with everything else.

The problem is that now I've gotten to the point that when I do have my major setback, usually, it's late enough that I would be pitting rookies versus whatever that ground unit is (with 10 hit points). I can kill them but only with rockets or shredder rockets, or preferably both, or with a sniper and headshot, or ... none of the above available with rookies =/

We're probably talking about different points in the game here. I rarely have much more than one squad of promoted guys; maybe 6, at best. Most games if I have a squad wipe it's all but one or two of my non-rookies.

You need to play much more conservatively. That's all I can imagine that'd boning you.

Has anyone ever bugged out and evacuated their men when a mission went to hell?
I did a few times. some bomb missions, one terror mission.

Yep, I did a few times, mostly VIP missions when the VIP got panic-killed; only once wasn't a VIP mission - my super-sniper (captain) bugged out when everybody else got smacked by some thin men.

I try to play conservatively... Unfortunately I run into the occasional time when I think I am being careful and then don't see a line of fire. Often it's because of new enemies that appear where I'm not expecting them, or a lucky shot by someone against one of my guys in cover.
