I haven't ever won one, this time I survived with _one_ member left to evacuate (but couldn't rescue a second who was CI'd)... this time it was a thin man who got high ground against me, but it's always something.
Just take it very, very slowly and try and bulletshield for your VIP unless there's really nice cover to stick him in. The extra defence action for the VIP is also really useful.

    • Also, the Thin Men usually drop in and go into immediate overwatch. If you've got a sniper, get him on high ground separate from your main group and wait; he can take out any TM who has a clear shot at your squad and VIP. Not moving more than once per turn (stay in the blue) is usually a sound strategy; more so on the council missions with the waves of TM. Overwatch everyone.

EDIT: Also, if you've got an assault who has Lightning Reflexes, TAKE ADVANTAGE. The first TM to react will always miss, and even if the second one hits, your guy will still (probably) be alive, and you can Run & Gun to take one of them out. That'll also free up all your other guys to move into better cover, since all the Overwatch TM will have already used their reaction shots.

      • Bulletshield? What's that, some higher level support bonus? I've not gotten above corporal with support, ever. Sigh. They tend to die quickly ... in my last game, I had 2 corporals, and one was crit'ed and the second died trying to stabilize him =/

Yeah, the overwatch bit I figured out. The problem was the thin men showed up right while I was killing the first set of guys... this is the first council mission, so no assaults with lightning reflexes (might have had one with run+gun).

Perhaps I should just skip the first one...

If you want to bring an assault rifle take an Assault or Support. The entire point of Snipers and Heavies is to have - gasp - sniper rifles and heavy weapons.

          3. The "carbine" thing is basically an extension of the light plasma rifle to exist for the other tech classes
Why? AFAIK the only reason for the light plasma rifle is so that it can be a gear level 2.5ish weapon. You encounter light plasma rifles a fair bit earlier than full plasma rifles (and so can capture them).

          4. The "submachine gun" thing is to allow medics to carry another item (another medikit, perhaps) and to allow another grenade in the early game when grenades are your most effective weapon available due to 100% accuracy.
Medics already get a talent that lets them carry two accessories. It is a high-level talent precisely because it's powerful.

The changes to the fighters I think would make the interception stuff a little more involved, and make it more significant to the gameplay besides "they will sometimes attempt to shoot down your satellites." Also the rescue mission adds to the mission diversity a bit.
The change to the fighters seems like mostly busywork that has the same result as what's already in the game.

You could do that. They show up randomly, so if it is happening too early for your comfort, you could skip it.

Not entirely sure what he meant by "bulletshield", I think just surround the VIP with your guys and use them to attract fire. Even without Lightning Reflexes, you could draw all the fire of the Overwatchers by moving your most... expendable... soldier. If he/she manages to survive, huzzah! If not, at least you'll be able to put your remaining crew and the VIP in better cover. A sacrifice for the greater good.

            • Exactly, if you don't have a good strong peice of cover to hide your VIP in, just get your team in a position where they are the obvious targets not the VIP. Even if you get him in good cover, just try and ensure that you've got a nice spread of guys around him, so if the Thin Man start jumping around he's never left exposed.

There's only one escort map that I really struggle with and thats the one where you start in a big room full of computers. Passed it a couple of times, but I always seem to take casualties coming out of the building.

              • Oh, goodie, that was the map I was on =/ Thin man appeared outside and behind about five turns in, just as I was finishing off the guys right at the door. Sigh. Lost one guy, grenaded him, then when I left the room 3 wasn't enough to hold off the thin men and sectoids outside.

                  • do you need steam to play this game?

i looked at downloading the demo, and it appears to be around 6gb in size. 6gb, for a demo, really?

                    • AFAIK, yes, it only runs on Steam. The main is 13GB... and the demo is probably only missing those art assets it doesn't need due to the shortness of the demo, so it would still need much of the assets and other elements.

If true I'm not sure I want it since it may cost too much sleep
With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

                            • Not sure, I couldn't tell exactly what that game was about. X-Com is pretty easy to find youtubes of (both original and new)... look for it That one seemed a bit more involved really - X-Com is pretty simple in some ways - but it is probably in the same genre at least.
