I encourage you to read the book. It's basically a collection of primary sources. He doesn't give any opinions.

Why do you "wish he hadn't" tried to work with the Republicans, if it didn't end up changing the contents of the bill?
Because he could have passed a bill a lot sooner if he had done reconciliation to begin with instead of trying to get a filibuster proof coalition of senators.

Several of the Republicans flirted with voting for it and kept telling the Dems if only X or Y was changed then they would vote for it. Of course, in the end the Republican leadership told their members that anyone who did vote for it would lose all RNC reelection money and be targeted in the primaries so ultimately none of them did vote for it. What that gamesmanship did do is result in several rounds of the bill being weakened in hopes to get a few Republican votes. That's a tried and true Congressional game and it's why many (most?) liberals started bashing Obama and saying he'd compromise with himself on his own compromise.

The hard truth is the Dems bent over backwards to try to engage Republican concerns and even whole sale adopted the old Republican plan but the Republicans decided to just be obstructionist as much as possible. Something they've maintained for the last four years even blocking their own bills which they wrote if the President dared to say he supported the idea. It takes a special kind of hatred and stupidity to kill your own bills just so you can "not hand the President a victory".

        • Could you name them? Which Republicans were saying that they might vote for the bill? What demands did they make?

You're asking me to remember specific names from like four years ago? I don't recall off the top of my head but I will do a google search and see if I can figure it out.

It can't be helped. It's the price of being conservative.
Is this your childish way of admitting you were wrong about the supermajority?

What makes you less intelligent is not your opinion, but your intellectual dishonesty.

It must hurt you to your very core that a gay fake Canadian knows more than you do about American politics.

I actually don't like the building. I think it's "heavy" looking. I am not a fan of Norman Foster.

                        Because Ben is adorable.

Re the Health Care bill: The GOP had nothing to do with the state of the bill. All changes made to it were done in order to get support from so-called conservative Democrats.
                        Not sure if serious.

EDIT: I see we've been discussing this since that post. Damned long lag times between checking board. Nevermind.

Yes, even going so far as to completely adopt the Republican plan and, of course, no sooner did Obama say he liked the Republican plan then the Republicans flipped a 180 and declared they hated their own plan. Isn't it obvious they were never serious about solving the problem and where just trying to be obstructionist?
