I'm beginning to be persuaded to the theory that Mitt Romney is not terribly bright.

That might be overstating it a bit (Mondale?), but that is as close to "right" as you've been in quite some time.

The problem is that his competition for the nomination were, almost without exception, much, much worse.

I truly believe that the day I’m inaugurated, not only the country looks at itself differently, but the world looks at America differently…If I’m reaching out to the Muslim world they understand that I’ve lived in a Muslim country and I may be a Christian, but I also understand their point of view…My sister is half-Indonesian. I traveled there all the way through my college years. And so I’m intimately concerned with what happens in these countries and the cultures and perspective these folks have. And those are powerful tools for us to be able to reach out to the world…then I think the world will have confidence that I am listening to them and that our future and our security is tied up with our ability to work with other countries in the world that will ultimately makes us safer… Barrack Obama, November 21, 2007

To tell you the truth, this doesn't strike me as any different from "you didn't build that" or any other embarrassing Kinsley gaffe of the last two years of campaigning.

The other thing is that Romney insulted people who aren't going to vote for him. Like, explicitly, "the people who don't like me are x". They already didn't like him. How many Romney voters does this actually offend?

You have no idea how hard it was being banned for the duration of the republican contested primaries + Herman Cain's run.

Every single stay at home mom?

There are plenty of folks who are part of the republican party's base who don't pay taxes and who don't collect benefits.

Now I understand if Romney's mission is to antagonize the Republican base, but why phrase this comment in that way?

It's not about how much taxes you are or are not paying, it's about the benefits. Why he didn't say that he felt that benefits were too generous and that many people who work for a living make less than they could make on benefits - THAT would resonate with a ton of Americans and still get the same point across.

This is a very common right wing talking point. It's complete bull**** but Romney is just feeding his wealthy donors the same BS talking points they've been hearing for the last 30 years.
