  • Stems cell injections reverse paralysis.

It's still early days but the tests seem extremely promising. I hope Republicans get a lot of flack for trying to block this cure too.

Spinal Stem Cell Injections Help Reverse Paralysis

    Jamie Condliffe

A new medical intervention has allowed doctors to inject neural stem cells into the spines of paralyzed patients, successfully helping them recover feeling in previously unresponsive parts of their bodies.
New Scientist reports that a small trial involving three partially paralyzed patients saw injections of 20 million neural stem cells administered directly into their spinal cords. The stem cells were harvested from donated fetal brain tissue, and the patients received immunosuppressive drugs to minimize the risks of rejection.
Before treatment, all of the patients could feel nothing below their nipples. Six months on, two of them can now feel touch and heat as far down as their belly button. While that may not sound impressive, it's a massive leap forward in the treatment of paralysis. Stephen Huhn, one of the researchers, told New Scientist:
"The fact we've seen responses to light touch, heat and electrical impulses so far down in two of the patients is very unexpected. They're really close to normal in those areas now in their sensitivity."
These three patients are the first of 12 to undergo the therapy, and the positive results will see Huhn and his colleagues push on with the tests. The results were presented yesterday in London at the annual meeting of the International Spinal Cord Society.
While it's not clear exactly how the stem cells improve sensitivity, the researchers suggest that they may be helping restore myelin insulation of damaged nerves, or perhaps causing existing nerves to function better.
It's too early to tell for sure whether the treatment could represent a standalone treatment for paralysis. It does, however, offer hope that in the future—perhaps when combined with drugs and physical therapy—the treatment could help make paralysis a temporary, rather than permanent, condition. Cool. Last I heard they were testing it on mice.

So you're ok with them killing children, harvesting their corpses and using the cells in other people? Disgusting.

The proper question Ben is how did the GOP block the research when they only disallowed federal dollars to the use of fetal cells and could do nothing about private funds and left public dollars open to the use of other sources of stem cells.

Could it be that adult stem cells have proven successful in treatment while embryonic ones have proved unsuccessful? I tell you, I'm shocked that republicans would make policy decisions based on science.

                Oh, right. I forgot.

They aren't people so it's ok to harvest them for the benefit of real people. I see. SOYLENT GREEN IS PEOPLE.

                  Stem cell research

It's worthwhile to note that most/all stem cells come from in-vitro fertilization (if I recall correctly), where more embryos are produced than the mother could ever bear.

Wouldn't the embryos be much happier if they were frozen forever?

                      You're quite wrong about that.

Most embryonic stem cells come from abortion.

So the choice is between 'frozen forever', and 'harvesting them for human medical research'? Snowflake embryo adoption is a much better solution. Lots of people want kids but can't have them, and this is one way that you solve this problem.

Even if the stem cells come from abortion, it makes sense to use them for something rather than throw them away until the time comes when abortion is finally banned.

That's a total myth. Aborted foetuses aren't suitable.

Sure, if you're into desecration of human remains. There are good reasons why we don't use them.
