It's one of the leading tomato producers last I checked, we also have a ton of citrus, and I see no shortage of veggies with literally around three dozen CSAs advertised locally. By and large though, yes, the land in most parts of the county is too valuable so it has been given over to other uses. That said it's a huge county with olives, grapes (mostly for wine), nuts, and even stuff like apples & pears grown at higher elevations. Yes, because there is so much diversity we're not tops in the country in any one category but there is a tremendous amount grown here even if we're not tops in any one category. I'd be willing to bet (without even looking) that we're probably one of the top 1%-2% of ag county producers in the country.

That is despite having a lot of very densely populated coastal regions. The climate is just that good for growing as is the local soils plus due to lots of geographical relief a great variety of things can be grown.

    • Hmm, looking it up it seems like cut flowers and ornamental plants (for landscaping) are the tops in the county for ag but then again they're also the most valuable on a per plant basis. I can't really blame local farmers for specializing in what they can make the largest profits in.

Yeah, and the basic idea behind locavorism is that it makes sense for Iowans to use Iowan corn in a lot of recipes.

Hell no. I always stopped eating at restaurants that I worked at.

                  • In a great move for local farmers tomorrow will become the opening day for San Diego's new Public Market. The San Diego Public Market will feature fresh produce, meat, eggs, fish, small restaurants/food sellers, as well as locally made craft items. They're trying to replicate the public markets in Seattle, Vancouver, London, and Barcelona with only items produced with in 100 miles of the city being offered for sale. Right now it will only be open two days per week but soon it is hoped the public market will be open 7 days per week. The city already has around two dozen local farmers markets but the idea of the public market is to have a go to place open every day where anyone can go and buy fresh local produce. Also, the founders (one of whom already runs two of the largest farmers markets in the city) is claiming that many things will cost up to $1 per pound less than going to a chain super market. Take that anti-local people.

Also just last month they got this project funded via kickstarter.com where they originally requested $92,000 in funding but locals donated a total of $140,000 in just two weeks to help fund this great public market. Check out their original kickstarter video.
