    • Aeson, have you tried okra? Highly nutritious, prolific and nigh-impossible to screw up.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

      • okra is one of the best foods. You can grill it, pickle it, fry it, chop it and use it in rice or gumbo. It's a really good food.

        • Okra is one of those things I just can't stand.

This thread has become a monstrosity, and Aeson's posts are pretty much tl;dr, but I'd like to call a round of applause for Jaguar for roflstomping the pro-locavore folks.

And you also can't tell the difference between $3 and $6 milk. You just have a poor sense of smell and taste. It's okay. You wont starve.

It would be an extremely minimalistic experience to be sure. You wouldn't have the extra time or energy to waste on banging children though. So I'm not sure where he was going with that ...

I had 0 experience with it before coming here (from growing or consuming it). Turns out I really like steamed okra.

And yes, it grows like a weed. We planted some last year. I think we ended up at about 3kg/sq m after 60 days, which is pretty good. Sale price and ease of selling was good considering how easy it was to grow.

We could have done quite a bit better on the yields. It's extremely vegetative, perhaps the fastest growing plant we've tried, so we probably had the fertilizer mix too high promoting vegetative growth over fruiting.

I also wasn't aware of just how much of a lightening rod they would be for whiteflies. Combined with how often harvesting was necessary every other day there weren't any sprays available that could be used once it started fruiting, and we had probably damaged the natural predators by that point using the broad spectrum sprays that were available. (I was not aware at the time that a simple soap solution in water is a useful spray against whiteflies and can be used without interfering with harvests or their natural preditors. Something to test next time.)

The extremely fast and consistent need to harvest was another thing which caught me off-guard. We mistimed the first few harvests, which resulted in lowered salable yields from them as we let the pods get too big for the local market's taste. (I like them a bit on the larger/crisper side myself. So it wasn't a total loss ... )

I think it will be a consistent crop in our rotations, and as a boundary/catch crop for whiteflies. They will ignore everything else for it it seems.

Don't be too harsh on him, the sticky / slimy juice can be hard to get used to. I had to find ways to reduce that, myself.

I see. I would say that people who care about total environmental impact do care about where the stuff they buy comes from, under what conditions it is manufactured, and what the total footprint of the product is.

I am not a rabid environmentalist, and I think of these things.

It's always fun to see people's misconceptions questioned, and the lengths they will go to do defend them.

The fact that people with zero understanding of agriculture are telling an educated person, who is doing the deed in the third world and is clearly quite knowledgable from education and experience, he doesn't know what he's talking about is quite comical.

BTW, you are even more the malajusted kid the civ 3 forums ran you off for. I watched you mature. And you did, a little bit. You're not quite there yet, Skywalker.

IIUC, the question here is not third-world agriculture but the efficiency of different food distribution systems in the USA or other developed countries. Does the Philippines feed its people as effectively as the U.S. feeds its own?
