Asher never claimed that 100% of people without insurance want it. His claim that such a high uninsured rate is "incredibly sad" only rests on the contention that a significant number of people want the insurance and can't get it. You are a moron.
His argument rests on the assertion that the number is proximate to those who want insurance but cannot get it. My argument rests on the assertion that a significant proportion of the uninsured do not want insurance, nor do they need it.

From the number itself, you have no way of proving that even most of those without coverage want coverage.

In my book healthcare is a necessary government service, on par with police and fire protection. Rich people living in gated communities with private security shouldn't pay taxes to maintain police precence in inner cities, should they?

Emergency services like ambulances are government services, sure, but primary care is not.

          You're an idiot.

I said it's sad that a quarter of the population is without insurance.

Whether they want it or can't afford it or are too stupid to understand they should have it is irrelevant. It's ridiculous that a quarter of Texas' population is a bad car wreck away from being indebted for the rest of their life.

            That's ass backwards.

In Canada you pay for an ambulance (unless you have private insurance), but primary care is included.

In the US you pay for the ambulance too.

The one ER visit I can remember (and that I payed for) the ambulance was the biggest part of the bill that I payed for (my insurance payed most of the rest).

This is America (they're already indebted for the rest of their life probably...)

The idea that what you have at the moment is preferable to everyone having free healthcare illustrates just how ****ing insane America's image of universal healthcare actually is.

Just for one second imagine that whenever you get sick you can just walk into a doctors or a hospital and get treatment, no paperwork, no bills, no dealing with insurance companies, you just go to your care facility and they make you better. Be it a cold or a broken arm or cancer or a heart transplant, the only cost is about $10 for an item of medicine (unless you're staying in hospital, or unemployed or old in which case it's free) and that covers any kind of medicine, no matter the real cost.

When you folks go on about how it's not possible, and it bankrupts countries and all that bull**** just think that we've had this system in the UK since 1948. You're being totally ripped off by insurance companies, and it's revolting to see people actually defending placing healthcare in the hands of companies who will happily let their customers die if they can avoid paying out on policies.

The fact that the US system is one of the least efficient in the world continues to make me chuckle each time some American starts talking about cost.

What amuses me is that none of the reforms in Obamacare actually brings down the cost curve in the right direction as evidenced by the fact that CBO estimates of the cost of coverage keep going up.

Given that is the subject of the thread discussion of it seems like a fair move when someone brings up cost.
