It never snows around here so why should I bother.

I'm tempted by Volvos. The trouble is that while the S40 is affordable, it's not got as much luggage room as I'd like. The V50 is great, but pricier so it would be older than I'd like.

When buying 2nd hand you'll want something that won't depreciate too badly.

The Ford Mondeo is definitely a safe choice, but make sure you get one that is fully equipped to help it not depreciate as you put the mileage and years onto it.

You know for your price range you could almost buy a brand new Chevrolet Cruze Diesel. Yes, they do sell them in the UK but you'd have to break down and buy a new car instead of a used one. They're the same size as the Toyota Carolla or VW Jetta but both get better gas mileage and has better performance. Think about it, a brand new car for $16,000 which is actually worth owning.

Learn about discontinued Chevy cars, trucks, and SUVs. Explore new vehicles that carry on their legacy or search for Certified Pre-Owned Vehicles.

The only problem is the diesel engine will be new for 2013 so you'd have to buy new instead of used.

Not even Italians want to buy FIATs as their market share in Italy is declining rapidly and they sell very little in the rest of the western world under the FIAT brand name. They've been surviving off of sales of other brand names as well as sales of FIATs to eastern Europe, North Africa, and the middle east.

The Ford Focus ST isn't a small car. A big boot and plenty of leg and elbow room for 4 passengers, 5 at a squeeze.

I like the look of this one

I buy used cars and run them until they die. Higher depreciation is actually an advantage if you buy cars like that.

I have a wife who doesn't understand the concept of travelling light and two kids who play the cello. It's too small.

                          Transit Van?

Otherwise known as a S-Max. Will be decent to drive, doesn't look too bad and will have a space for the cellos your family take on holiday.

Strong blend of comfort and performance. Fun to drive. Standard equipment is high on all models.

Nope, you want to get a car that will have done its depriciating already. Hell, I suspect my Prius has appreciated due to the steady rise in petrol prices and that I got a good deal.

An Alfa 159 would be interesting but it's Italian so it's going to be crap. The sheet metal turns to rust the second it rains, the engines are designed to blow up the moment the warranty expires, and the electrics were designed by the Prince of Darkness.

Still, it's a nice looking car.
