Might want to hold off on that recommendation
Analysts and industry experts said the Detroit-based automaker, as many others have since Toyota Motor Corp.’s acceleration problems, took responsibility for the problem before it could get out of hand without any reported injuries.

It had to do with stupid people who poured motor oil all over the insulation on the firewall or equally stupid people who failed to replace the clutch tens of thousands of miles after they were supposed to. In any event Chevy is cleaning up after those dumb asses for free and neither of those problems would apply to diesel engine. BTW 50 suspect fires out of at least 500,000 cars of that type built (that's the number GM is recalling) isn't bad and is probably pretty normal.

The Avensis would probably last longer than the Mondeo. The 2.2 D4-D engine doesn't look too gutless either with 177 hp.

Why lookie here. A 2008 2.2 TDI Accord estate with just 29,000 miles on it and meeting your price requirements with a whole six pounds sterling to spare.

My previos car was a 15 yo. mondeo - it could easily live some 10-15 years more.

Absolutely false. I don't know what kind of snow you get in your corner of Yurp, but even the light snow we get in northern Virginia is enough to pwn Kuci's Prius.

If you're driving a car with rear wheel drive and low ground clearance, that education will tell you "leave the car at home" when there's a foot of snow down.

In recent years we've had snow in Britain (lots in Yorkshire) and my Prius and that of my dad have coped fine. If we put winter tyres on it'd kick ass.

Extremly important in England... oh wait...

Or even better, since I am in Croatia now and managed to drive 60km on a motorway in a snowstorm in the middle of the night, where they could not clean it as fast as it fell (due to death in family), and we managed just fine... I think that the abilites to drive in bad conditions are OK (probably on most of the cars today, except rear wheel drive, providing that you have good tyres, and chains)....

Since Bugs is desperate to buy a Prius here it is in snow...

                            the day after snowstorm

Not quite Canada, but highly unlikely that such conditions will appear in England short of the gulf stream stopping.

Roads in the South have a different kind of surface than they do in areas that get lots of snow. It gets very hot and humid there in the summer and they have to survive that. As a result cars don't stick to the road as well in cold weather. Also Virginia typically gets more ice than snow; rain will fall during the day, for instance, and freeze over night into a very slippery sheet. People down there typically don't own chains, and winter weather is sufficiently rare that they have little experience driving in it.

Even so, I don't know anyone in Rochester who has a Prius, mainly because of the poor performance in winter weather.

I guess it has been decided then. Bugs will be buying a Prius.
