Even the Catholic School Board is worried about being abolished now.

Province’s commitment to Catholic schools ‘questionable,’ says trustees board

The Ontario government's commitment to Catholic schools “is questionable” despite what it says publicly, alleges a document from the provincial body representing Catholic boards across the province.

“There are enough indicators to show that this government's support for Catholic schools is questionable,” says the report, obtained by the Star, concerning anti-bullying Bill 13.

“The minister, however has been consistent in saying that the defunding of Catholic schools is not on the table. Time will tell.”

The message is from the executive director of the Ontario Catholic School Trustees' Association in advance of Monday night’s teleconference of its board of directors to discuss Bill 13, which the province recently announced would force Catholic schools to have gay-straight alliances if students want them. The Catholic boards' opposition has rekindled the controversy over whether the province should be funding a religious education on the public dime.

The report notes that the bill will pass this Tuesday and “the objectionable amendment regarding the requirement to allow the name 'gay straight alliance' will be part of the bill.”

It goes on to recommend that the association not launch a legal challenge, and that principals who receive requests from students to start gay-straight alliances should allow them, but adds that “this does not, however, remove the right of a principal to ensure the appropriateness of materials used in the school.”

It also says that a gay-straight alliance could be a “subset” of larger groups called “respecting difference,” or “open arms” — names that have been approved for anti-homophobia and other equity efforts in Catholic high schools.

Top officials from the trustees' association are meeting Monday with Education Minister Laurel Broten “and if that exchange has any bearing on the recommended strategies, it will be reported” later during the teleconference.

A memo included in the report from Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board trustees — the board that was ground zero for the gay-straight alliance debate, after a student publicly challenged her principal's decision to ban such clubs — says a “clear victory” would be needed if there was to be a court challenge.

It also says that Catholic schools have lost the public relations battle on this issue, and acknowledges that “those who opposed Catholic education have been able to rally around this issue ... using it as an opportunity to attack Catholic education.” It also says it has been “portrayed as a system that does not meet the needs of bullied students or students who are struggling with their sexuality.”
"The issue is there are still many people out there that use religion as a crutch for bigotry and hate. Like Ben."
Ben Kenobi: "That means I'm doing something right. "

Get rid of the support for religious schools and the laws against bullying and Canada might start to resemble a free country.

It's already an overlapping system, hence the benefit of merging them together into one public system. I went to a public school immediately next to a separate school. The duplication and waste of tax funds is obvious.

We don't need more schools, just fewer boards.

I'd say something about that but I don't want to be chastised for picking on poor Ben again.

Since the church teaches abstinence before marriage we can assume that they look down on kids having sex in high schools. (normal or SODOMY)
So if you have a gay student who is still a virgin, why is the Church giving him a hard time. According to their beliefs, he hasn't committed any sin yet. You would think the church would be thrilled that he is abstaining. If you're a catholic, are you only against gays if they're not virgins?

Ben has somehow managed to show why you should have laws that violate "religious freedom" (such as not letting Muslims kill people for religious reasons) while still thinking the government is should be expected to let the Catholic church do whatever it wants in the name of "religious freedom". Muslims shouldn't be allowed to kill people, Catholics shouldn't be allowed to bully homosexual students until they're suicidal. Simple.

I think it's more like castrating themselves, they ren't going to be able to brainwash the kids to be like them any more. Except in church.

BTW, what's the difference between hate speech in classes and the way some religious schools teach certain subjects?
