  • Beginner Rifle Training in DC Area

My girlfriend and I are looking to take intro level rifle classes. Neither of us own a rifle, so we would have to rent. I've shot maybe once in my life, but she has never done so. We aren't looking to buy rifles. I'm a complete newbie in this, so have some basic questions.

What is a good rifle range? The NRA range doesn't rent guns. Gilbert Indoor Range in Rockville gets good reviews on Yelp. Anybody here tried it?

How would you go about this? Personal lessons? Talk with the range? Just walk in?

What is a good rifle for a starter. .22?

    Thanks for your advice.
I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

I've been up to Gilbert, seems like a nice place. I haven't shot there though.

Felch is probably your man for DC. Been a long time since I've put in any range time. Used to shoot clay pigeons with my grandfather and cousins in years past

My friend has a .50 automatic with hollow points. He's a little scary. I suggest the .22

With or without religion, you would have good people doing good things and evil people doing evil things. But for good people to do evil things, that takes religion.

I've never actually been to Gilbert's, but the guys at Atlantic Guns recommend them. They should be perfect for what you're trying to do. Their site kind of sucks, so just call them and ask about classes, and what to do for beginners.

Chuckle... She's trying to convince me, but Europe has nothing on the P.R.D.C.

Is it even possible to buy a gun in DC?

You have my sympathies. Good luck, DanS!

Why a rifle? That seems so odd to me. At any rate, try .243 caliber.

.22 is the best to start out with. Little or no recoil and the bullets are cheap to buy.

.22 is a good can plinker. It's the most basic gun in the U.S.

What do you ultimately want to do with a rifle? If this just for self education do you plan on going hunting? If so what do you plan to hunt? Figure out the anwser to that question then buy a rifle appropriate for your needs as practicing with the one you are actually going to use is far better.

I think if he's getting a .22 he's probably not planning on hunting. And I would also guess that a first gun should be for learning the basics of shooting, not hunting. But hey, I don't know much about guns.

Read the OP. He's not going hunting. He's not buying a gun. He wants to shoot a loaned gun.
