I'm late to this party, but I own a (2007) Subaru Outback and like it a lot. It drives well - plenty of power, handles well - and gets decent but not great gas mileage (~24-25 miles to the gallon in mostly highway driving). It looks like a station wagon, of course, but it does not drive like one. I got it because it has enough room for us, our daughter, and the two dogs (though that's a stretch) and has a roof-rack for a cargo thingy. The All-wheel drive is nice... I think it really does help some in the snow/ice.
I would imagine the Forester "drives" similarly. It has less cargo space, though. If this is for commuting for 1 guy, both Subarus seem like overkill.
After test drives, the winner was the RAV 4 (by a good margin).
Bought a brand new RAV 4 V6 4WD Limited w/ the Leather & JBL Sound package. Won't be delivered for 1-2 months due to demand, though.
Subaru was 2nd but the dealer was a hardass in negotiation and rubbed me the wrong way. Further, the closest dealership is 15km in the wrong direction from me. Way too far.
The Rogue wasn't very impressive. The CVT just isn't for me. The power isn't there when you punch it -- it lags. At high freeway speed the engine sounds like a shopvac.
The RAV4 goes 0-60 in something like 6.5 seconds. Night and day difference.
I ended up getting the car for cost + 1.95% (default markup is 9-10%) and didn't deal with any sales people. Went straight to the fleet manager and got it all squared away with him. No haggling required. Saved $2900 off the sticker price. My employer has an agreement with that dealership.

Did you buy any extras? 2% markup just doesn't seem like a healthy business to me.
They tried very hard to sell me all kinds of extras, and I bought none.

Oh, I am very sure. I'm sure the CVTs in F1 were a different breed than mid-grade consumer cars...
The CVT in these are optimized for fuel efficiency, not performance.
It felt very laggy in acceleration (for the first few seconds), then it was very loud at sustained RPMs.
