The whole rushing to the supermarket thing is from bygone days where a storm or snow could prevent shipments of food into city stores for extended amounts of time. Now a days, the infrastructure can handle anything short of Katrina so it's really retarded. There is no point in 'stocking up'. Stocking up for what? Monday morning everything will be opened as usual. Hell, most restaurants, all fast food places, supermarkets, drug stores, etc. will be open tomorrow Irene or not.

You are so ****ing wrong. Maybe next time you think something, you should just assume the opposite is true. You would start looking like an informed genius then."Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi

I can understand people fleeing storm zones but I am always surprised at the idea that some people dont have enough food and water on hand to last a few days if they stay at home and the shops close. Maybe its my rural upbringing (or Mrs Flubbers costco shopping) but we have enough food and drink for weeks and weeks. In two weeks our milk would be gone but we probably have a hundred juice boxes and 24 bottles of gatorade plus pop, beer and water. If the power went, hell I might have to eat meat every night to clean out our freezer-- if the gas went I might have to alternate cooking on the coleman stove with our little propane BBQ-- as long as my house isnèt flooded out or ripped apart--we would be fineScouse Git (2) La Fayette Adam Smith Solomwi and Loinburger will not be forgotten.

I think the brunt of it is in DC now. No big deal. Lots of rain though.I came upon a barroom full of bad Salon pictures in which men with hats on the backs of their heads were wolfing food from a counter. It was the institution of the "free lunch" I had struck. You paid for a drink and got as much as you wanted to eat. For something less than a rupee a day a man can feed himself sumptuously in San Francisco, even though he be a bankrupt. Remember this if ever you are stranded in these parts. ~ Rudyard Kipling, 1891

Originally posted by self biased View Postactually, the hudson river is affected by tides south of the waterford dam.
The lower Hudson is actually a tidal estuary, with tidal influence extending as far as the Federal Dam at Troy.[1] Strong tides make parts of New York Harbor difficult and dangerous to navigate. During the winter, ice floes drift south or north, depending upon the tides. The Mahican name of the river, Muh-he-kun-ne-tuk, means "the river that flows both ways."[8] The Hudson is often mistaken for one of the largest rivers in the United States, but it is an estuary throughout most of its length below Troy and thus only a small fraction of fresh water, about 15,000 cubic feet (425 m³) per second, is present. The mean fresh water discharge at the river's mouth in New York is approximately 21,400 cubic feet (606 m³) per second. The Hudson and its tributaries, notably the Mohawk River, drain a large area. Parts of the Hudson River form coves, such as Weehawken Cove in Hoboken and Weehawken.
The Hudson is sometimes called, in geological terms, a "drowned" river. The rising sea levels after the retreat of the Wisconsin glaciation, the most recent ice age, have resulted in a marine incursion that drowned the coastal plain and brought salt water well above the mouth of the river. The deeply eroded old riverbed beyond the current shoreline, Hudson Canyon, is a rich fishing area. The former riverbed is clearly delineated beneath the waters of the Atlantic Ocean,
It actually is an estuary that far up! Did it extend further prior to the construction of the dam? The article isn't clear.
Hmm. There must be other qualifiers to coastal, but in the Hudson's case I can see it extending at least to Stony Point. No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
