I have a friend who studied history in undergrad and got a history degree.

He also studied physics and computer science (I don't think he had majors in them though).

He got into graduate school in physics at Carnegie Mellon, got a PhD in Nuclear Physics, went on to work on a Gravity Physics experiment before finally settling down as a Atmospheric Physics scientist (but not professor).

I too pursued a History M.A. after deluding myself into thinking teaching high school social studies in Texas was a good idea. Holy **** was that a mistake. A little advice to any parents reading this post, immediately crush the aspirations of any child who wishes to teach. Next year I'll begin teaching basic literacy in the federal prison system. It's not something I would have imagined doing when I graduated but I'll take harden convicts over helicopter parents any day.

You were in the public school system? TX is better than most. Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with it but I've enjoyed teaching.

I've done all kinds of jobs. I planted trees, delivered pizza, etc, anything to pay the bills so that I don't have any debt.

Texas is actually not better than most states and consistently ranks below average in graduating high school students. The state average for SAT scores is also terrible. A couple years ago Texas was something like 45th in SAT testing.

Yeah I graduated from the Plano school system but RISD and PISD are atypical for the state. The student performance in affluent districts like Plano is at a total different level compared to public schools in Dallas or Grand Prairie, for example.

I do not think you are joking. I think you truly believe what you just said. and by definition I think you are a racist. "ADJUST FOR MINORITIES" !!!! You must be ****ting me. So a white texan is better than a black or hispanic texan. They're all ****ing Texans. So much for unity. So much for united we stand, divided we fall. In fact, the low score of minorities shows that Texas is probably full of racist teachers like yourself that look at their minority students as less than a person and therefore don't make the ****ing effort too teach them. You cannot have less academic expectation from a person based on race. That also means you have less expectations if you hire them or don't hire them because your expectations are less . Saying that you did good for a black guy is bull****. I hope you are not teaching now. If so please resign!!
By the way, I'm black and my SAT scores were 1090(1988) and 1140(1992) a little above the national averages of 1006 and 1001.
