Perhaps, but given the knowledge that most big earners have not 'worked' in the literal sense of the word for that money, it's from a psychological point of view pretty rough to do menial tasks, in particular if you're intellectually capable of doing a lot better. I suppose everyone at some point has done factory work and the like as a holiday job. The work is boring and you can't relate to your colleagues, which are probably the two most important motivators to go to work every day.

Btw MrFun, if you graduate in history, you really should've studied something extra to extend your scope a bit, haven't you? I'm not sure how that's like in the US but it's pretty common here. Even though most people don't land a job 100% in their original area of expertise, most tend to end up alright.

To be fair, if you graduate in history, you really are only qualified to flip burgers, or maybe take a teaching qualification to teach history. (if you don't go into academia)

I have a friend who studied history in undergrad and got a history degree.

He also studied physics and computer science (I don't think he had majors in them though).

He got into graduate school in physics at Carnegie Mellon, got a PhD in Nuclear Physics, went on to work on a Gravity Physics experiment before finally settling down as a Atmospheric Physics scientist (but not professor). I don't think the history helped him at all though.

Plenty of jobs around that just require a relatively clever mind and some analytical skills. So that's just bull****.

And more graduates than ever, and plenty of degrees that show those two things more than history.

Mr. Fun, have you looked into teaching at a Community College?

Around here the foreign service and civil services are loaded with history majors.

The foreign service particularly, or so I was told. A history BA was almost a requirement.

This would be something I would love to do, as a career. I have a year and half experience teaching as an adjunct.

But after applying to more than fifty community colleges a couple years ago, and getting nothing but rejections, I gave up for time being, thinking the market is too saturated with people with Masters and PhDs in History, looking for cc teaching positions.

Another possibility that I would love to do, is working in a management position at a public library or an academic library. This would require me going back to school for a Masters in Library Information Science, which I cannot afford right now - I don't want anymore student loans debt.
