  • Massachusetts was the first to give the gays equal rights. Not California, not by a long shot.

    • But it was by a court ruling

I don't get why the majority votes on rights for the minorities out there.

Canada made everyone happy by first having the court ruling, then having a vote on it in the House of Commons.

          2 for 2.

But it's nonsensical to leave rights to majority votes.

          • I've a feeling in 50 years time, when atheists call for votes on stripping religions from special status and rights they'll hide behind the court system and have an about-face when it comes to majority rule.

            • Frankly, we should take this a step farther. Whenever anyone in your city becomes married, we will hold a referendum on the matter. Because clearly the precedent is the population as a whole gets to dictate who gets to marry who.

Makes sense. Marriage benefits exist to promote the public interest, right?

Actually, in the 60s it would have been Dixiecrats.

                      • I get confused with my recent American bigotry history. There's just so much out there to study and know.

That's true. Although you were only off by ~4 years.

                            • I wonder if the "damage to society" argument is no longer being used? It's been in Canada for six years now, and as a society we're stronger than ever relative to the US.

I think the new argument against gay marriage is "it's a religious concept". Which should alarm anyone who understands that there is a separation between church and state. If it's truly a religious concept, the state has no business being involved.

Either way, it's a losing argument against equal rights.

Interesting. Wikipedia seems to say it died in the 60s.
